Belgium Military Rope Drum

Loading...

Made by Sonorus drum company (rhombus shaped logo). Stamp on drum “SAL-E SUPERIEURE, SONORUS, M-----E, DER--, F. Panny, Rue Van Artevelde, 137-139, BRUXELLES. 7” x 14” Brass Shell, Wood Rims. Skin heads, gut snares, brass shell, snare mechanism works, leather ears all in good shape, some wear on rim and rope. This drum is a wonderful museum piece in good condition. It is still very functional with TLC.

It is difficult to put a specific date this drum. Based on my research Sonorus was founded in 1903 by M. François Panny, after studying with "Selmer Paris". At first they only made wind instruments, but rapidly began making drums & percussion. In 1936, M. François Panny decided to completely stop the production of wind instruments in order to concentrate on drums & percussion instruments. Musical Instruments in Brussels and Wallonia: descriptive inventory (1992), has exact listings of “Tambour de marche”, made by F. Panny, Rue Van Artevelde, 137-139, BRUXELLES from a Ils proposèrent que soient collectés dans ce siège tous les objets, documents et données historiques, dans le but de « perpétrer les gloires et les traditions de la Brigade of Grenadiers. Name written on snare side head: Felix Cauberghs. It would be great to find him!

A similar drum is found online at the National Museum. NMM 10,042. Side drum, France, ca. 1850-1900. Stamped on the strainer: ΔН / 290. Brass shell, 283mm (11-1/8") x 404mm (15-7/8"). Rope tension. Nine leather tugs. Wood rims painted with yellow, orange, and black triangles, with holes through which the rope passes. Brass snare adjuster. William F. Ludwig II Collection, 2001.

Very, very nice drum. Thanks so much for sharing that. The painted triangles on the hoops are common to Western European drums and help determine Country of origin, but I've never seen two different patterns on the same drum. Are both hoops original to this drum?

Not sure about hoops. I found it at a shop in London. I was curious about the country(s) color designations. Red, Black, Yellow are Belgium, I think. Blue and White ?
