Nice project. I'm sure you will enjoy it! The old large 3-ply Ludwigs are a blast to play.
I did the same many years ago. Incorrect FT legs and cymbal stands have been corrected along with adding a set of old giant beats since the photo was taken. :D I still have another set of the same size shells for another future project someday.
Ok so my hole spacing is like 3/4 for the bass drum Spurs. Does that sound right?
The 1/2-in spurs were used in 6-ply drums; I believe your kit used the smaller ones. I think your serial numbers (1,6xx,xxx) would date around '77sh.
I enlarged my holes slightly to accept the larger 1/2-in spurs. I glued a wooden reinforcement plate made out of some poplar. I sanded one side of the bracket to match the shape of the shell and I inverted the cup washers.
I'd just use real spurs since it's already drilled for them. I'd also put a shell mount cymbal holder also. what color wrap Green sparkle ?
This could very well be a green sparkle kit. I like the thought of champagne also. The Green would hold more true to the Bonham vibe though.
Got some bleach / water mix around last night and finally got the inside of these shells scrubbed out and let them bask (sp) in the sun for a couple hours last night. Will probably do this again soon once all the lugs are off. I didn't want to take the lugs off yet because once I get my claws in the mail I want to set this kick up and whack it a few times. More to come! Between work and my kids it makes it hard to get to these!

Had a small amount of time today and wanted to try and remove some paint. What I thought was paint! Im so confused. I put some citrus strip on the shell waited 40 minutes. Tried scraping some paint off. You can see the color difference in the first pic. No paint was really coming off but what was coming off seemed like plastic to me. I wiped off all the stripper. I then went to the outside seam of the shell. I strted to pull at the corner to see if this was indeed wood or a wrap of some sort. Now I was thinking this was a wood piece but why would it be white underneath that piece if it was wood? So confused and just a little frustrated. What does it look like to you guys?

I just received a call from Randy and he set me straight on what this is. Cortex! I feel much better about this. I will be purchasing a heat gun this week. Anyone have one they like for removing wraps? Any tips as well are appreciated!

When using the heat gun be cautious. If you overheat a spot the wrap will bubble up and pop. Happens quicker than you'd expect too. But yea a heat gun will get that cortex off with ease. Learned the hard way many years ago when I did a whole tom without the aid of heat.
