Beginner question: how tight do you set hi-hat?

I found these rubber washers they look like someone cut a 1" superball in half and drilled a hole through them. They were on some cheep hi-hat stand. I use one rubber half-ball washer on the top of the top hat and I use a traditional felt on the bottom of the top hat. This gives me the ability to tighten the cym. down between the two but still have the washy, tilt motion, as well as avoid the choking which sometimes takes place.

I think tama started making offering them on newer hi-hat stands.
