Before & After Pic of Using a Bench Grinder Wire Wheel on Claws

Hey all,

These nickel claws for my 1954 Leedy & Ludwig marching snare were very rusty and tarnished...I tried using vinegar but with only minimal results...I then tried using an extra fine wire wheel set up on my bench grinder...I just lightly touched the wheel with the claw and watched the years of rust and tarnish disappear quickly...I then used a j-e-w-e-l-l-e-r`s (censored) polishing cloth to buff up the nickel and to add a protective coating...

These turned out very well...I don`t think I would use the wire wheel on any chrome plated parts though...

I just wanted to share this...

Cheers

Looks great! When there that bad you almost have to do what you did. I agree with not doing this to chrome also. Thanks for sharing!

Hey, I've had very similar results using my Dremel with 512E "abrasive buffs."

No, it don't work on the chrome, but the nickel seems to hold up fine.

You have to wax or clearcoat them to prevent the return of the rust !!

Nice result and I go with the other comment to the effect that when they've gone that far, you may as well do your best to clean them by whatever means is successful. Thanks for the head's up.

The j-e-w-e-l-l-e-r-s (censored) polishing cloth that I used is supposed to leave an anti-tarnish film behind...It`s the first time I`ve used it...I guess it would be comparable to a Cape Cod cloth...I will see how durable the film really is...If not, the claws will have another date on the wire wheel and will get clear coated...

Thanks for the tip though Oddball...I appreciate it...

Cheers

Don't clear-coat them! Rust -never- stops or goes away. If you clear-coat the piece, all you'll be doing is -sealing in- the rust! You are correct, Cape Cod cloths and the like leave behind a protective film. That's enough. At least you'll be able to clean them up anytime rust starts to show again. If you clear-coat them, you'll have to strip off the finish first.

I have a two-wheel buffer that I use. For chrome parts, use two 6" cotton wheels. Coat one with dark rouge (dark stick) and the other with the white rouge (white stick.) The dark rouge will knock off all dirt/grime and the white wheel will put a spectacular shine on the parts. I highly recommend a buffing station to anyone who restores drums regularly. Huge time and elbow-grease saver!

Too many great drums to list here!

Thanks for the info John...I`m leaving them as is for now and see what happens!! It`s been close to a week now since I`ve polished them and we`ve had some humid weather...All is still ok...

I have a cotton wheel on my grinder as well for chrome...I agree, definitely worth the investment for the regular restorer/detailer...

Cheers

Purdie, does your buffing wheel have a variable speed motor or fixed. My hands get tired of cleaning chrome. Thanks, Steve
