Yes, your right! Its definatley not painted! Its very difficult to find information on these, I guess they didnt make drums for very long. :S

Either way, its still a pretty cool find! I would like to learn more about it..

See if you can decipher exactly what the text on the drum head reads. Eg. Is there a town named Beatty nearby ? is that Sian ? etc.. etc..

It looks like the head reads Stan Beatty Band but who knows though how many hands (or bands) this bass passed through. Hopefully, Matt (CT Pro Percussion) will see this and chime in. Rope tension drums are his thing.
