Bass drum tuning assistance please!

Loading...

Hi All, It's been a while since posting here. I am itching to take my 1971 Slingerlands out to a few gigs. Looking for some help dialing in a nice bass drum sound.

I will be putting an Aquarian Modern Vintage 2 on the batter, the head has a built in felt strip. The reso is a ported Aquarian Regulator. I need to use a ported because of micing and the band logo.

What tensions would you tune to on the heads? Higher on reso? Medium on batter?

The drum is a 22 x 14 Slingerland 3 ply maple, poplar, mahogany

Thanks

Myself I install, tune up high, apply pressure to middle of head, get all the cracking out of the glue, then take it back down to where it sounds good in whatever particular room I happen to be in - it's going to change everywhere you take it. But generally it's higher on the reso...

This I lifted from an earlier thread... This is from TommyP ( hope he doesn't mind )... It works for him and I also find his method works well for me . .. It is quick to do and makes much sense...

""" THANKS! Rogers certainly had it all together back in the day. The Swivo hardware is indeed excellent! I've been playing Rogers and using all the original hardware for a long time... never a failure. Regarding the Evans EMAD on the bass drum/batter: I use the COATED EMAD on all my bass drums. Reason for that is the coated EMAD accenuates the fundamental/lows without sounding or feeling "floppy". Goes without saying that all of this is of course, completely subjective to personal opinion. This is just what works for me! Tension/tuning couldn't be easier... and I have ALL my bass drums set up this way too. Top two and bottom two tension rods carry the actual tension, which one has to determine based on personal preference. The three side tension rods are tensioned "just above a wrinkle". What this does.. for me .. is give the bass drum a killer LOW END, yet retains enough tension top/bottom for articulation. I use the smaller of the two "rings" supplied with the EMAD. The front/resonant head is Ambassador coated white, with ONE felt strip. The front head carries the actual "tension" and is tuned "up" for projection/tone. There is no muffling/padding inside the drum. Super EASY to get the bass drum in "the zone" every time! Again... just my personal preference. I know there are many others!"""

Cheers

John
