Bass drum spurs

Loading...

I have a 20 inch 1965 Ludwig Super Classic bass drum and I wonder if the spurs are different lengths between 20 and 22 inch bass drums.

Thanks.

I have not run across a difference in the spurs from that period. They were sometimes mounted in way that the spurs didn't really support the drum well. I assume that you are talking about the gull wing fold out spurs and not the disappearing spurs. You can add some of the taller rubber isolation tips to help in this situation or also use a bass hoop anchor.

Yes the gull-wing spurs are the same but mounted "lower" on a larger drum. Ludwig's disappearing spurs are so often placed un-symmetrically on the shell - one spur more extended than the other in playing mode, too high up on the shell, and a bad angle which invites cracking the shell through leverage if too much pressure. Now, Rogers on the other hand, they absolutely nailed the disappearing spurs...:)

Thanks. I have the gull wing spurs. It's a good idea to try a new rubber tip. It appears that the mounts are in the correct position but I have to have one spur pushed in more than the other to get the drum level.

I usually prefer the stock style rubber tips. But like I mentioned, I have used those beefier isolation tips in this case. They really help.

Ah, now *that* is what's meant by "classic Ludwig". :)

You detect correct! :) Very happy with my Club Dates but in future if budget permits, I will hopefully switch up to silver glitter 20/12/14 Rogers with the faucet BD T-rods and the grey interiors. I used to not like Rogers because of the tension casing design, reminded me of some of the imports, but I got schooled - everything about them is chunkier and just generally more robust. I guess it helped that Keller was making the shells, and could therefore focus on doing that one thing really well.

I attached a couple of pics where I think you can see the difference in how "tough" each brand looks.

Cheers,

Mitch

It looks like the club dates have a different style spur than I have. Both kits look sweet.

Yes, they often have the straight rod disappearing spurs, sometimes front and rear.
