Bass drum inlay question

Loading...

I am just about done rehabbing a vintage MIJ kit that was missing claws, rods and hoop on one side of the kick; I've found all the correct missing parts locally.

Only thing I need to do is get a new inlay for the kick hoop. It should be a darkish blue sparkle, as often seen on MIJ kits of the 60s/early 70s.

Has anyone ordered inlay material from a particular source that was reasonable with the price? I obviously don't want to get killed on this.

Recommendations welcome and much appreciated!

Thanks,

Charles

Hello Charles I have never actually ordered any inlays from a drum wrap company

But I can not imagine they would be too expensive based just on that small amount of material needed

Good Luck

Precision Drum inlay price for sparkle wrap.

1/4” - 3/4” wide - $17 per set of 2 when ordered without a bass drum precut wrap

Charles:

I think I know exactly the dark sparkle you mention from that era. I have a set of Tempos and a couple of Star snares in that colour. A friend who has wrapped many of my drums ordered some bass inserts from Precision for my Tempos which never had any when I bought them but, they were far too light a blue. Nobody's fault. Things change in nearly fifty years. Perhaps, some type of ink or stain might darken the inserts. I've never tried it. Maybe someone on the forum would know. Another company? Old inserts for sale?

Hello again Charles

I edited my first reply above to you shortly after posting it

as I got the idea that you wanted only to order new inlays

But Salty's reply made me wish I had left my original alone

I went on from there to suggest being a little patient

And more likely than not a suitable donor bass drum shell might pop up

with a close matching blue sparkle shade with which to harvest some inlay material

Working well in your favor is that blue and red sparkle have to be the most common

sparkle wraps used ..Best of Luck

Thanks a lot, guys.

This particular blue sparkle is a shade I've only seen on MIJ stuff--never on USA drums, not even that beautiful dark-blue sparkle that Slingerland had. It's actually quite a striking shade in person.

Pic attached.

I know Precision carried something like it a while back, but I think they only stock the lighter/standard kind of blue sparkle now.

There are some companies that do color mixing, I believe. I'll have to look into those.

Anyway, other recommendations welcome.

Thanks again.

There is a blue sparkle MIJ 12x8 tom shell on ebay that it looks like it might match your kit. The shell looks like it has some water damage but the wrap looks OK so you can just pull the wrap for you inlay and toss the shell and not feel bad.

Thanks a lot. Looks close. I have a thing about sacrificing perfectly useable drums as parts donors, though. Just can't do it. I can only deal with spare/leftover parts.

I think I have a roll of the stuff you want. I can cut some rough strips for you to finesse at your end. I'll avoid the holes of course...

If it's cheap enough to ship [probably] I'll just send it along no worries...
