Hey Guys,
We are getting a large sticker to put on my resonant bass drum head. It is pretty much going to cover the whole thing.
I was originally thinking the artwork was going to be printed on the head but found out after the order was put in that what was meant was the place would put the sticker on the head for us, not print it on the head. Should have known better than to let a guitarist order the artwork for a bass drum:)
So this got me thinking about how the sticker may change the tone of the bass drum. I normally use a Remo Coated Ambassador and use a felt strip. I was thinking it may be better to go with a smooth white Ambassador for the sticker for a couple of reasons. Thinking the sticker may sit better on a smooth head. Thinking the sticker may change the sound kind of like making the head a 2 ply so at least starting with a smooth head the overall thickness would be less than if a coated head was used and therefore potentially less of an impact to the tone.
Do you think this is making more of the issue than it really is? Especially since I already use a felt strip to muffle and occasionally a thin blanket?
The options I am considering are:
If smooth is better than coated, I have a clear Remo Emperor but that is a 2 ply head so the overall thickness would be even greater.
I can purchase a Remo smooth white Ambassador.
I have a Remo coated Ambassador.
I have a Remo coated Powerstroke 3.
The used heads are in barely used shape.
Or maybe you recommend a head not listed?
The order is already in and paid for so we are going with the sticker, at least for this head. Next time I may go the route of having it printed directly to the head.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Wes
