Back In The Vintage Game... Slingy Style

After an extended holiday from owning a vintage set, I'm recently back in the game. Played some gigs a few weeks ago with a bassist who was using an original (not reissue) 1962 P-Bass. The lush sound and amazing vibe of that bass guitar was more than enough to convince me that I needed to get me some.

Made a mutually agreeable trade with Dana up at Bentley's for this Slingerland set. 12-14-20 with matching Krupa model one-ply snare. Date stamps are Feb 1962. Beautiful mahogany interiors on the toms and bass. Much like that '62 P-Bass, the sounds coming from these drums are LUSH. They are not as loud as my modern drums. Very warm and more a "blend" sound than a "cut through" sound. Overall, I couldn't be more pleased.

Beautiful drum set, and a wise choice of brand and sizes. It's pretty difficult to play press rolls on the snare drum when you drape a tea towel on it, isn't it? I think that this drum set cries out for a canister throne.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

Super nice kit. I had that exact setup as my first kit, used, in red sparkle, bought for me by my dad in like 1973 before they had any real value. He paid less than a hundred bucks for the 4 pieces. I was a stupid kid and trashed them pretty bad but I take care of my stuff much better these days Keep on Pl

The tea towel, in this case, is a leather chamois. I carry 4 or 5 of them in my gig bag. On that particular gig, one of them was used on the bass drum batter head squished in behind the pedal posts. The other one on the snare drum gets used when the band is playing songs that feature heavily muffled snare drum sounds. Yeah, press rolls are difficult, but usually the songs that I use the chamois on aren't chops-oriented drum parts.

No plans to use the consolette. It's just easier and more stable for me to use a snare stand. I'm using one of the new Tama Classic snare stands for that tom and it's working out quite nicely so far.

Throw off on the snare is the 3-pointer, and it also has the extenders on both sides. I did have a minor issue with the wires loosening up over the course of 3 or 4 songs. A mild annoyance, and may just be part of the deal. The Krupa snare with the sticksaver hoops makes me really happy! So many sweet sounds in that drum.

Mike, the cymbals are as follows:

Hats - 17" Paiste Trad thin crash over 17" Dark Energy crash

Left - 20" Sabian Sound Control ride with 2 rivets

Right - 22" Old A Trans Stamp (ultra thin at 2050 grams)

Could you post some pictures of the snare? Sounds like you have the Radio King model.

Yeah, it's a Radio King. Slingerland just wasn't calling them Radio Kings in that particular time frame. The Super Krupa snares had the clam shell throw while the Krupa model had the 3-point.
