Axis Pedals- the next evolutionary step from the Speedking?

Loading...

Yeah- the spring is external, but the linkage is much like a Speedking (solid link between the pedal and the beater). But I see it having more similarity than not.

I got to borrow a pair for my mongrel Premiers. I may have to figure out how to afford them.

There are quite a few direct drive pedals. The pearl demon drive as well as my favorite pedal the Yamaha direct drive come to mind. If you like the axis pedals may I suggest ya try the yammies.

Back to the topic... I think the feel of the speed king is more about using compression springs vs normal springs.

The two closest "modern" pedals to the speed king would be Tama's King Beat from the late 70's/80's and the Trick Pro 1V pedal. A close third would be Slingerland's version of the speed king. There have been other direct drive pedals with a standard spring before and currently. Yamaha is the biggest proponent of offering direct drive, as is Pearl with the Demon, Slingerland had the yellowjacket, premier the 252.....direct drive alone does not make a speed king....compression springs would be a more accurate comparison, like the first two I mentioned.....

Whats the point of this again? :p

I do see great simplicity and function from the Speedking design, which is why it has lasted so long.

I don't want to step on Speedking lovers' toes, as I love that pedal, as well. And that where I may end up, once again!!!

Ill step on those toes... I've played one. It was in fantastic shape and very smooth. Yet no matter what I did and how long I played it, I never felt comfortable on it at all. Plus the freaking beater would always swing back and hit me in the top of the foot leaving a nice welt from the plastic beater/barefoot combo.

As I stated before, I think the closest two you will find to the feel and playability of a speed king is a Tama King Beat (more adjustments and reasonably priced when you find a good one, and built like a tank too!) or a Trick Pro-1V. Many more adjustments than a speed king but pricey...worth it? Possibly, only you can decide by playing it.

Bunny - I have a Premier 252 direct drive pedal sitting in the basement collecting dust. It's a rock-solid and very smooth operating pedal. Make me a swap or cash offer on it and it's yours. You'll have a Premier pedal to go with your Premier kit!

Let me know if you're interested.

John
