Hi Jim thanks for the reply. I bet it was the blue in the opaque white when mixed with the clear that gave us the greenish tint. The first coat was a mix of opaque white and clear. I was going for a translucent white color to show some wood grain throught it. We upped the white in the mix till it covered but then got the green color. That must be where we went wrong. He had just painted a guitar in opaque white then a tinted clear for a beautiful aged white that came out great. But I didn't know the opaque white paint has a blue base color to it. Interesting! That would explain the green color when mixed with the clear. Thanks very much for the info it really bugged me LOL. Glenn.

One of the very first basses I did was a basswood body with a white stain on it.

we stripped and re-coated that thing six times before we were happy with it!

We stained the wood and then applied an automotive clear (old PPG system 2000 I think- no longer made). In the end it looked exactly as we wanted it to, but it was a bear- at least as bad as a black stain...

From that experience I learned to seal as I go. if you want to tint the clear, apply a straight clear coat first, so if you have to take it off, you can.
