Attention Buddy Rich experts and fans.

Hello again!

So i am a 28 year old history major in University here in Montreal and ive decided to do a project for my American Post-WW2 Culture class on Buddy Rich, tying him as a person into the larger scene that was happening at the time as well as his contributions to drum history. The reason i chose him is because we need to bring an artifact from that time to present to the class while talking and i thought it would be neat to present pictures of my Buddy Rich WFLs and maybe bringing in a tom or somthing. It would help me to learn more about the history while in the process of reading about him. We use a lot of mutlimedia in the class so i can use youtube vids and other types of links and I had the idea of presenting his nice side like him on the muppets show or a night show then showing the audio files of him cursing out his band. It wouldnt be a problem as long as i warned my class of the vulgar language. Ha! Anyways, if any of you BR enthusiasts can recommend any resources like writing, photos or videos or contextual ideas it would be awesome!

As a HUGE Buddy Rich "freak" myself, including a very large collection of BR media which is all inclusive regarding type of material, as well as a one of a kind BR collection of snare drums between the years of 1949 and 1980, all I can say is GOOGLE the name Buddy Rich... everything, and I mean everything, you have asked about will be at your beck and call. There is literally a TON of material out there about Buddy, and covering every decade of his most illustrious career. For example: Four books come to mind... "Traps The Drum Wonder" written by Buddy's good friend, the late Mel Torme... "Mister, I Am T H E B A N D !" , "The Torment of Buddy Rich", and last but most certainly not least, "Super - Drummer, A Profile Of Buddy Rich" by Whitney Balliett, all of which I have in my library. "Traps" is probably the easiest one to grab and still readily available.. ( not to mention very good ) .. whereas the other three are LONG out of print, and expensive if you can find them. Sooo...

PS: My avatar pic is a 1965 Rogers Buddy Rich Celebrity set and my main gigging drums, although I also have WFL, Ludwig, and Slingerland BR sets too! :-D

turbojerk!...

Gotta mention, seeing hows you did... I "discovered" Buddy in 1967... I was but 12!... my dad brought home the "Swingin' New Big Band" album with Buddy on the cover in FULL COLOR sitting behind his Rogers WMP Celebrity set. I stared and drooled over that cover for years whilst listening to Buddy tear it up on the vinyl inside the jacket... and have never stopped, hence my collection of "all things BR". You could of course do the math... or ... I'll just say that I'm 55 now... and I swear it seems like only yesterday. Indeed!

Well, thank you TommyP! ..and thanks for sharing your story turbo! I do have some time to look for useful info so il keep checking back here...in the meantime il start searching the net for details..are there any stand-out controversial or otherwise interesting facts about him off hand..besides the whole bus incident? Cheers!

Tommy, I've been trying to find a nice BR poster for my drum room but haven't been able to find anything decent. Any ideas?

And I can echo the greatness of a couple of those books mentioned above: "Traps, the Drum Wonder", and "The Torment of Buddy Rich". Very nice reading.

My drum room has framed pics of Buddy all around the walls and are centered by two LARGE matted/framed B&W photos of Buddy taken at different points in his career. One of the large posters I got off eBay... then I trimmed, matted, and framed. Looks original and museum like in quality. All the other 8X10's I also got off eBay over the years with all of them being original pics and/or ads that Buddy was involved with during his career. makes for a nice drum room... ( shrine to Buddy is more like it says my wife! ) ... LOL! So,

Have a look around eBay under Buddy Rich in the title box... you'll find a bunch of candidates. From time to time one seller in particular offers LARGE B&W posters of a couple different poses featuring Buddy. One of those would do the trick for you I think!

The large ones are what I'm particularly looking for although some smaller ones would work also. I have checked on Ebay before but I guess I just need to be more vigilant. Thanks!

Both my LARGE BR posters, each a 16X20, came from eBay... well, actually, the David Redfern is an original B&W print and probably worth a few bucks.. ( not to mention a fabulous shot of Buddy behind his Slingerland's with this incredible look on his face kind of yelling at the trumpet section ) .. but the other one is a nice quality B&W poster that I trimmed, matted, and framed. That particular seller is on eBay quite a bit, but not constantly. I will keep an eye out for you too!

Great good MB.I saw Buddy play one time in '68 in L.A..Got one of his sticks and we had a hand shake.I was 15 and still have that stick.
