Just wondering if these are worth the $400 asking price. I know very little about vintage Japanese drums so any info on these would be much appreciated! What would be an equivalent sounding drum set? Thanks!

I would say that's all the money. Popular color ,8-lug bass drum and 2 up, two down. Probably closer to $300, but if you NEED it...
When was the last time any of us saw an MIJ kit with a 2-up/2-down configuration, plus a matching snare drum...in a desirable finish? If the finish is not cracked or damaged, I think $400 is a fair price. I'd still try to negotiate, just because that's what we do! Still, I've NEVER seen this configuration before. If you like the kit, get in touch with the seller!'
Here's the link so everyone can see the kit... http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/msg/5136082243.html

To many questions about the set for me..First the Astro name was made by Star drums..Star never made that set up it looking to me a piece together set why?
Snare drum lugs dont match the set
bass drum lugs and tom lugs dont match
14 floor lugs dont match the mounted toms
they dont show the 16 good so i cant see the floor tom leg mounts
so iam thinking the snare for sure was added also the 14 floor was added..

Looks pretty dilapidated to me. Like ok it may be hard to find but in the end it's just a cheap drum kit. My opinion though. That $400 can be put towards a much better vintage kit you can actually play. I got a one owner Slingerland 22/16/13 mid 1970s kit for $20 more than that MIJ.
Thanks for the info everyone!
Still debating if I want to pop on this or not....
I have NEVER seen a big name vintage kit for less than $900 (in quite poor shape). The used drum market(and just about every other market) around here in NorCal is quite expensive.

Really? How long have you been looking?
Here's what I turned up in 3 minutes. This one is literally within walking distance of that MIJ kit:

No snare, but he's throwing in an extra 20" bass drum shell in the same wrap. If you buy this, I'll work a trade with you, the Super Set-O-Matic for a regular Set-O-Matic and a Slingerland Festival snare from the same era.

Early '70's Slingerland New Rock #50 in blue agate (20-16-13-12)
Late '50's WFL Swingster/Barrett Deems in black/gold Duco
'70's Slingerland Gene Krupa Sound King COB
early '70's Ludwig Acrolite
'80's Ludwig Rocker II 6 1/2" snare
Rogers Supreme Big "R" hi hat
Well, I've not come across any of these myself. I'd say price not outrageous, though I'd be happier at $350. All Star it appears - snare lugs from teardrop series. Probably thicker shells, around 1970..? Slingys would be the better quality drums for sure, though the concert toms are not as popular - could sound great though. depends what you're after.

Dilapidated?!! In what respect? Another poster mentioned the different lugs on the snare drum. Sure, but I don't see that as a minus. Was the kit pieced together? Possibly. Still, the only "pieced" drum appears to be the snare drum, due to the different lugs. I've seen this style of lug offered during the same time as the Slingerland-style lug, so no big deal here. The bottom line is that any interested buyer should just go check out the kit and make an offer.
As for your one-owner Slingerland kit for $420...good for you! I see that as the exception, not the rule.
Again, all this is just my opinion!

$400 US for missing badges?
you guys are either crazy, or desperate
$35 per piece, add a little if its immaculate condition, but generally, MIJs are pretty much just slapped together, with cool wraps sometimes
to each his own...
