Aria Percussion Japan kit

Loading...

I have an Aria drum kit which I am struggling to find out more about. The badge simply says "Aria Percussion Japan" and there is no cereal number or further indication of a model. The shells seem to be brass judging from the sound and the fact that they are not magnetic. I have 12, 14, 18 toms and a 22 and a half inch bass drum. the kit also has a snare with it although it is currently in storage and I do not have the dimensions.

My question is can anybody help me find more information concerning this kit? Perhaps a rough valuation and an idea of what style's and tuning's could bring a better sound out of it than I have been able to achieve. The kit belonged to my dad when he played around 30 years ago or just under. It has passed to me and any support to give me a better understanding of it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you :)

Have you looked inside ? Are you certain they are metal & not wood w/ a Copper color wrap ? I have reservations that your set is entirely brass. There are other metals that are non magnetic, (some compositions of stainless steel, aluminum & various aluminum alloys). (Wouldn't a brass bass drum require a fork lift to move ? ? )

not entirely brass no, but the research I've done led me to believe that at least some of the components contain it. Either way I'm not claiming to know anything. http://martiandrums.tumblr.com/ This link will take you to my tumblr containing pictures of the kit because the files were too large to be attached to this post. I will not use my Tumblr so they should just be the most recent pictures on the site. Cheers :)

We had a set like those posted recently.8-lug mounted toms and the same color even.Being sold at a second hand store.I believe they are Hoshino-built drums. The tom mount is unique to that brand. What part did you think was brass? The drums are plywood covered with plastic/pearloid sheeting.I don't know if Aria drums ever made it to the states, but the Hoshino's did.

There is an Aria guitar company in Japan, they have been making guitars since the 60's at least I think, maybe they offered drums at one time.

The kit, by the color of the wrap ,the tom holder, which look original, and the claws and tension rods on the Bass Drum,if original looks like 1980's.If the claws etc are not original the it looks like the tom holder and drums could be 70's. The lug casings look like Rogers influenced copies,or early Tama or star lugs.I believe some japan made Stewart drums had lugs that looked like that also.

from the pics it looks like the drums are wood, the covering or wrap on the outside could is usually a plastic laminate.A few american drum companies offered actual metal wraps, like chromed steel or copper, but I am not aware of any Japanese kits that were.

Yes, Aria is a Hoshino brand, and this copper-coloured coating is typical Hoshino. I have a friend with a kit in the same coating, only 5-10 years older, and branded Hoshino.

The lugs are very accurate copies of Rogers Beavertails.

Luan, and not very accurately made bearing edges but solid hardware is typical for Hoshino.

Thanks for all the help, this should be more than enough information. The pictures will no longer be right at the top of my Tumblr as stated before as I have used it. Cheers

In 1983 I bought my Aria drums.

These pictures are taken in a studio in Gothenburg (Sweden) in 1983, when the kit was brand new and I still have it:

They are dark blue and I have 8", 10", 12", 13", 14" and 16" toms. 14" snare and two bass drums. Only one used at this recording, though.

The toms ared marked as Shiro Percussion but the snare and bass drums are marked Aria Percussion.

Obviously, Aria and Shiro are the same.
