Thanks guys,I wasnt aware the "classic" shells had the same finish on the interiors as these.I have another 1969 double bass kit with 6 toms that the inside of the shells have been painted black. Is it possible to reproduce that acoustical finish?I found some of the keystone repro badges on ebay that would definatly be more economical for this. Where can I find repro b/o badges? I really like the idea of converting these, but i have read threads about people trying to pass a drum kit off as something it really isnt, and seems like I remember some of you guru's not liking that idea.

Blue/Olive badge drums from 1969 to about 1972 shells would have a natural maple color interior. From about 1972 until the end of the three ply shells in 1976 they would have the granitone interior.

Ok then, These standards have a stamp on the inner shell date 1969. On my 69 Silver sparkle kit that the interiors of the shells have been painted black, It seems like an almost impossable task to remove all the black paint, especially around the reinforcement rings. Have you ever done this?

Thanks and glad your back!

I personally don't see any harm in converting them, since the original wrap is toast anyway, they will be known as a re-wrap, devaluing them as Standard series drums since those wraps are not currently available. However, being rewrapped in classic series finishes, using classic hardware and badges is technically not "counterfieting" classic drums, since they are real Ludwig shells (as I stated before Standard and classic series drums used the exact same shells) you are just upgrading them to what they should have been from the factory to begin with. Also, it may actually increase the value over what they were from the factory.

Yes, I am saying a rewrapped/upgraded to classic spec Standard drum will be worth more than a totally original Standard drum, so it may be worth it, especially if the finish is toast and the badges are missing.

Besides, if for example, you buy a stripped shell off of Ebay with a granitone interior and no badge, how would you know if it was a classic series or a standard series?

You can remove the black with Citri-strip. It takes the paint off a layer at a time and is easy to work with and is environmentally friendly. Its not easy work stripping paint, but it's worth it in the end.

These have been rewrapped in yellow cortex or something. I pulled the wrap off of one of the toms and it looks like some sort of simulated natural finish

Check this out. This is what's under the wrap. You can also see an impression where the original badge used to be. Is this the original finish on these drums?

I am planning on removing the wrap off of the rest of the shells tomorrow, but I have to go to my fiancées dad's birthday party tomorrow too :(
