Are these stencils?

Loading...

I ran across this set this weekend. It has the clamp style hex-rod mounts instead of the single screw type common to most 70's stencils from Taiwan. The set includes Pearl bass pedal,hi-hat stand and snare stand. No badges on any drums, and the snare is what looks like a typical cos/pos.Anyone heard of stencils with these mounts?Usually stencils would also have spindly snare and cymbal stands-these are real Pearl stuff. This would be a reach for me-they are in Cali,I'm in Mass.

So,I've contacted the owner and he says no badges anywhere.I have never seen stencils with these mounts.I need a second or third opinion regarding whether or not they'd be worth the effort (shipping expense). These are my favorite era Pearl drums-IF they ARE Pearls.

Those swivel type mounts were made to mimic Rogers Swivomatic.

That snare looks Taiwanese to me. The rest of the set could be MIJ or MIT, hard to say from that pic, but that mounting system was used on both MIT and MIJ drums.

The wrap, however, also makes me think that this is a later, Taiwanese set. I dont know what the seller is asking, but my feeling is that this set is not really worth shipping across the country. I'm sure you can find something on your local CL that you would be happy with that would save you the shipping.

The lugs are certainly the early Pearl Diamond lugs. The mounts are the last of the MIJ Pearl mounts. What else is there? The hoops on the bass are chrome, and look, from what I can see, to be the Japan ones, not the later Taiwan hoops.

Also, I don't think the snare is original to the kit. It is the later cheap "stamped" looking ones that the music supply houses call Student Models these days.

If it was genuine Pearl, it surely would have Pearl badges.

I'd pay US$ 100 (or even less) for it as it could be MIT as well.

If you are really after that red metallic finish: go for it.

Otherwise I wouldn't spend one Cent for it.

What i think its looks like a 1974-76 Pearl set could be one of three made by them..9ply wood shells,or wood fiberglass shells,or fiberglass shells..why i think this the tom mount, bass drum lugs, floor tom leg mount, and the t-rods on bass..pearl did have a finish called Silk. it came in gold,sliver,blue,red..if you could get better photos of the tom mount, inside shells, ete i would be able to tell you more...Also that set could be a recovered set and thats why no Badges are on the set....Mikey

It does look to be around the wood/fiberglass, fiberglass era. They seem to be enjoying a comeback. A lot of people seem to appreciate that specific sound lately. That kit is in good shape. If it is in fact W/F, and cheap enough, you could make a quick turn around on the kit. Or even better, just play and enjoy them.:D
