Aquarian American Vintage heads Last viewed: 1 day ago

I just purchased a 60s Gretsch kit (see my other thread), and the previous owner had just outfitted the kit with new Aquarian American Vintage heads (to accommodate the oversize shells).

I must say, I am blown away by these heads! Not only do they look like old calf heads, they're super warm. I did some very minimal tuning on the gretsch kit and I was completely shocked by the feel. I've tried Remo Fiberskyn heads, and found them a little "muddy" - they didn't seem to have any attack unless they were tuned way up high. With these Aquarians, I am using medium-low tuning and getting some awesome tone and attack out of the kit.

If you've got oversize shells, do yourself a favour and try these out. Even if you don't have oversize shells, I believe the "Modern Vintage" line are the same thing without the slightly enlarged size.

I have the aquarian vintage heads on my 60s kent kit! I couldnt beleive how much better they made these thin shells sound. I went from the original Kent coated to these aquarians and i am truely impressed with the results..

Heres a sound demo of the aquarians on the upper tom and floor tom with just a standard remo diplomat clear for the reso sides...(Snare drum isnt a kent though).old video disregard the mistakes!

I have them on top and bottom of my 60's Gretsch jazz kit.

They sound great but, I wish other heads would fit the drums so I could compare the sound. LoLoLoLo

Is that a supraphonic snare?

If I want to get the deepest tone out of these heads would I use a "medium" on top and bottom? Or are guys using mediums on top and thins on bottom?

My kit has mediums on the batter side and thins on the reso side... works quite well at medium tuning and higher jazz tuning. Might try mediums on the bottom if I wanted a deader rock sound.

Hey y'all,

My local drum shops don't stock the American Vintage heads, not many stores stock Aquarian at all down here, and I want to make sure that they'll fit my '47 Radio Kings before ordering a set in. It's got coated ambs on it now but they're tight... split collar tight. They sound pretty damn good but I'm not convinced that's the best they could sound because I don't think the heads are truly seating correctly and they're a bit finicky to tune.

Can anyone here do me a solid favour and measure the inside diameter of the collar? I'm after 13", 16" and 26" so those would be perfect but I guess any size will do to work out how 'oversized' they are and if they'll fit.

I've heard those 360 Evans have a wider collar too but I should be able to take the 13" in to a store and try it there.

Thanks,

Cam
