Apollo Snare Throwoff

I took the drum completely apart, cleaned it and put everything back together - it runs fine.

Here it is outside today. Please excuse my front yard - I'm tearing it up and putting a new lawn in..........lot of wheel barrow & shovel work.....sore back right now!

I'm not going to put new heads on it.....the Rogers batter & Apollo reso that came with the drum sound fine. I like the WFL snare stand. Everything is in working order. The blue case came with the drum. I've seen one of these before - it probably is the proper case for it.........anyone know?

The seller has offered to give me a $50 refund because the strainer is missing the arm.

I believe that to be an original Star case. This is a 5 ply, no ring shell and should be a great little drum. One of the best snares from Star I have ever had the pleasure of storing is a 5 ply w/rings. That one is now in professional hands and has become a fixture in his studio.

My WMP Apollo snare is one of those shells, the one that was busted up when I got it. Tough drums! Cracked all the way through the shell and nearly a mess, but I rescued it and it is a nice match to my kit and sounds really good today.

As for the fiddy bucks, I'd gratefully accept it and go one about your business as the UPS screwing you took was brutal, and Goodwill still made out on this snare. At 78++, it is a nice drum, but....I know you are a sucker for red sparkley things...

Haha - Yes = Red Sparkle.....any sparkle for that matter......and I haven't even been to the Glitters yet, well - except for the DW Oyster Black Glass Glitter I once owned. It was sold a few months ago to help pay for my Gretsch USA shellpack that's coming. Paul Cooper from Gretsch says he was drilling the shells last week!

The Apollo you mentioned that was broken up and you repaired - it's the one on your video right? I watched that a few times - good of you to post it. Entertaining too, thanks. It sounds like they're nice little drums if you get the right one.

This snare has a little buzz in it when wide open and I think it may be due to a bearing edge - it's quite common. I did tweak the edges a little but I didn't want to do too much. I may do a little more today just to see it that is the problem. I have a sanding table all set up for that sort of thing. Overall - the drum is in beautiful condition and - it does sound like a drum. I played it with some of those incredibley nice brushes from Brushfire for 1/2 hour in front of the tv last night.....swhat I like to do in my old age lol. The drum sounds pretty good so far.

Mikey is sending me the strainer control arm. Thanks Mikey!!

And thanks for your help here.

Q#1, yes, it is the WMP in the repair video.

Sitch#2 Check the snare beds, are they deep enough/wide enough? Touch them up with a 100 grit sanding to just open them up a little bit, a very little bit at a time. This should alleviate the buzz.

Brushing#3 Try one of those Aquarian Z-100 coated heads. The coating is supposed to be the best coating ever applied to a drum head. It is applied in such a way as to eliminate flaking and cracking, as is common with Remo especially, and to some extent Evans. And it is a sweet coating for brushes. If you have a big box music store in your area, they should have the promotional snare head display. If not, talk to the drum shop manager and insist he order them. When the stores order the promotional snare head display box, the heads are normally sold for less than $10.00 USD. I use this head on all of my woodies exclusively now. It is a sweet head. If you can't get one locally, let me know, I can send you one for cost and mailing. Don't worry about tariffs/taxes, there should be none the way I mail.
