Apollo Megatone value

Loading...

So I went to an old music store yesterday and it was like walking in a time capsule. The 1st thing that caught my eye was this high end looking drum....with an Apollo badge. I never owned Apollo drums but have seen many broken, rusty ones in basements and garages. This one was mint though....with the exception of 4 of the snare wires and the fact that the heads aren't original. The heads were changed, I was informed, because the original ones denoted cheapness.

It has a parallel strainer and is really heavy. Anyone have the skinny on this?

Nice snare. It is a Star King Beat with an Apollo badge. Steel shell. They later became Tama and they were a popular snare. New wires are tricky to find and expensive. Here's mine. The second one is a Tama Imperial Star version from the mid/late 70s. Very nice snares.

OK - someone want to explain this to me? I am a bit intrigued by the shell. The etching like that - that shell has always been a Pearl shell, as I have owned many snares like that - and they are all Pearls.

But come to think of it, I also have a Majestic snare, which is identical to the Pearl snares (Pearl lugs from the battleship era) - yet we all know that Majestic has always been Star.

Was there outsourcing across these two?

As far as the OP - that is a beauty! How does it sound? That is quite a find. Perhaps you are a bit green to the MIJ world? Many pleasant and exciting discoveries to be experienced over here!

It's a classic piece- play and see if you get the sound you are looking for. Is it really a steel shell? It's hard to believe this wouldn't be a COB- just throw a magnet on there and let us know.

I haven't had great success with getting my sound on COBs- they seem to choke up with a little strange overtone no matter how much I work with them. So, I suggest really play it and tune it up- see if you get you with it. No doubt it's classic.

I find it hard to believe that no-one alive and active on the internet would not have any knowledge of this - whether from experience as a Pearl or Star employee or as someone who worked in the industry in some type of capacity. This would date such a person to be as young as their 60s now. Surely we have members here that old. Remember that this includes not only Pearl and Star employees, but also retailers and market watchers from many different music career perspectives. Musicians from those days ought to know such things if they were gear-heads like we are today on this forum.

We (and those at DFO) arguably have (are) the most knowledgeable MIJ experts in the world and we do not know this?

My Majestic badged snare is Pearl through and through, and to our knowledge Majestic was always Star???? Shall we now begin to question that assertion or must we admit that there were cross breeding, I mean, outsourcing - at least at the retail level if it is so hard to imagine it happening at the wholeslae/manufacturing level. This very well may be explained by a hypothetical rep representing both Pearl or Star or even a US retailer deciding to use both Pearl and Star to 'create' their house brand stencil kit.

BTW - I do not recall if Apollo has been attributed to Pearl or Star or both.

I put a magnet to it, and it's a steel shell. I won't know about the sound entirely until I take the NOS Ludwig Rocker head off of it. It sounds OK, I just hate snares with power dot heads of any sort.

About where I got it...

I do know from conversation and digging through stuff at the store that they dealt in Ludwig forever, Gretsch a tiny bit in the 60's, Premier in the 70's and 80's, and carried Star and various Star brands as their budget drums for a long time. Ruether is another one they had at one time or another. They guy who was their Ludwig guy also supplied them with their "second line" stuff. They have a bunch of hardware parts that look to be Pearl/Pearl clones from the 70's.

They mainly did band/ orchestra sales and rentals. So they have about 50 acrolite "kits" (bells, bad, drum and stand in case) and some Royal Star snare kits...not sure if they built those or what. Unfortunately, all I've looked through thus far have been well used and wouldn't be a real bargain to pick up. They also have about 200 NOS 15" slingerland batter heads. The box is cool so I may go back and get a few but I don't have a 15" drum.

The best part of the story (albeit sad in a way) is that after 53 years, they are closing the business. Everything is 75% off the ticketed price. The Apollo snare had a ticketed price of $225, so I got it for $62.50 plus tax. I also got a NOS Ludwig Super Sensitive, with the hang tag still attached. It is an Elkhart era one, B/O badge, dead mint, less than $200. I also snagged a couple Premier tri-lock snare stands, a pile of lugs for Acrolites (or other) snare drums, P-85 strainers, and springs, legs, mallets, etc..... for dirt cheap.

I always heard these type stories but this is a first for me.

Well, I've been reading these posts with interest, as I enjoy these snare drums a great deal. These drums are quite good. I own a Pearl diamond 8-lugger,a later Pearl stencil with 5 lines and just won a Dixie, which is also 8-lug with the two lines and the center vertical lines. This will be my only Battleship-lug snare, and I'm curious how it will compare to the others. All are tip-style throws, which are OK because I don't tighten the $h1t out of the snares...
