Apollo Kit

I might get to pick this kit up for a good deal. Does anyone know what this finish is called? Green Agate? Is the missing bass drum hoop going be just straight up impossible to find? Also, how hard is it to find 8 Ts and claws for the bass drum? Probably depends if they are metric or not....but....if they ARE metric does anyone on here have something like that?

It looks like it needs a 13 inch hoop, a 16 inch hoop, a 20 inch hoop with inlay, rods, and probably some mounting stuff...like a cymbal holder wing nut/cymbal arm, and the tom mount for the 13 inch tom......bass drum spurs...etc....but I sorta want to take on a restore project with this one.

It appears that the rail mount is complete and working. The finish looks pretty good overall I think. The pic of the bass drum makes it look faded on the side...but I think that might just be the pic.

What do you guys think? What would you call "A Deal" on this kit and how difficult do you think it will be to complete it?

Thanks in advance for any help!

I think that might be Green Onyx, or Green Tiger Stripe...

Yes, the matching bass hoop will be nearly impossible to find, but sometimes fortune does smile on us (ebay.)

The t-rods wouldn't be impossible to find, maybe difficult, but you could find something that works without too much hassle.

As to the value of the set, being a 3 piece with parts missing, I'd say no more than $150 or so. If you're in love with the wrap, or the color green, maybe you'd be willing to pay more. I like onyx, but I cant really get into green drums, so this set isn't too desirable to me. If it were a red or blue onyx, however... I have a set of WMP Apollo's just like these (in fact, I played the bass drum at a show just last night) and they are very solid and the teardrop lugs are pretty nice looking.

**Be sure to check the rack tom for extra holes near/around the mounting bracket! I would be very interested to see if it is original. My understanding is that usually these came with a flat tab type mount (mine did.)

Let us know what you decide. And if you pick them up, please post some more detailed pics.

Edit: And check the bearing edges on the sides with no hoops!!! If they are chewed up it might kill the whole deal, or you can use them to talk down the price if they need a lot of work!

I paid 350 for a BDP kit 20,13,16 5.5 steel in excellent condition so i,d say 100-150 is great, esp for that color. You may spend another 100 for parts which i assume you can find on ebay.So for 250 you have a very nice playable and unique backup kit....btw,mine is a Star kit but the lugs and grey interior are identical.

Got an update from the seller.

No spurs or FT legs, but the tom mount is functional and there are no extra holes on any of the drums. He is going to send me some pics of the bearing edges, and the wrap and says there is a box with some tension rods etc in it...so it might be closer to complete than we think.

The rack tom is a 12 inch tom though which is kind of a bummer. I dig the 13/16 tom set up. No biggie though.

We will see!

Thanks,

Adam

Will do.

The sizes are 20/12/16. A pretty cool kit. I am thinking I am going to grab it. Rest assured everyone will hear all about the parts I need to complete it!

Likey very muchly. Go in to it with the attitude of I am going to have to get a lot of parts, and it ain't gonna be cheap, so I'll offer you 75.00, if he is asking like 150. Don't be shy man, these CL sellers know they are dealing with A#1 Flakes, so go with as much cash in hand as you are willing to pay and low ball the hell out of him. The hoop will not be hard to find, I can get you that, but the INLAY, now that will be nearly inpossible. However, you can get a Green spark to hold you over till the right one pops up, it won't look too bad, or you could carefully remove and store the original, and go with green spark on both till you get the right one. Now, I low ball everyone of CL, because let's face it, they only get a couple of real buyers out of 92 emails, and then they don't show up. With CL, showing up is 90% of the battle. If they have dealt with CL at all, they know if you show, you will buy, and they want to sell, even if you are low balling. $100. is top dollar, considering the missing parts. Sorry, but much more is too much man, those are 6-9 ply mahogany, not 3 plies.

Very cool kit- I would grab it if the price is right.

Reminds me of this one that`s sitting in the back of my drum room- different lugs but the wrap really looks similar- ofcourse this one is blue onyx and yours is green. I think I paid 100$ . Mine has no badges at all on any of the drums but sounds very good. I since use the 16 ft and 12 tom as a groovy cocktail kit at times- fun! I like that your has gray painted interiors- looks like some attention to detail and nice lugs.

The wrap of your green kit is correctly called, at Star's: 'Green Agate Pearl'.

Must agree with cn679 concerning green drums. Besides yellow this is the second colour I really dislike at drums. - But OsakaBop has it, in a cool blue! Yes Sir

Concerning a fitting bass drum hoop I also think this is the biggest issue on this item. It could be solved by buying a chrome hoop and putting a rest of a similar green onyx pearl wrap piece into it.

For my bass drum I bought a rest sheet (normally dedicated for a small snare drum), cut it into stripes and completed the hoop with three parts, as the length of one stripe was too short. It works well. Each selling shop of wraps anywhere has such rest pieces laying around.
