Apollo Drums are following me!

Loading...

In the past few days, I've seen a couple of Apollo kits around and I'm thinking one might need to come home with me. Neither have a snare. One is a red sparkle kit with 12/13/16/22 and what appears to be original heads. (Including a logo bass head someone cut a 3-5" off center hole in.) Then there's a blue satin 12/16/20...

I know these are stencil brands and probably aren't worth a lot, but if I made the effort to convince my wife that I do in fact need another drum set, are these worth getting and what is a fair price? There's just something about the blue satin flame that would look really cool with my gold stain flame RB Grestch. :D

If the satin flame is in good shape. Those tend to age very ungracefully.

As a second kit, sure. They aren't much up to speed, you will at least want to sand the bearing edges and replace the batter heads. If you really want to make the sound punch, you can actually recut the batter edges if you wish to take it that far.

BTW...yes, a '60's Japanese stencil even with snare shouldn't really top $300-400; one in good solid condition.

Yet another...this one in a really funky wrap. Are these things this easy to find or is it just clean out your attic season? I'm thinking I might check 'em out a little more and offer a couple hundred bucks if one's up to snuff.

Man, why didn't anyone else offer these great (or ugly, depending on your tastes) wraps other than the Japanese stencils? I know Ludwig Standards had some funky wraps, but compared to some of the house brands kits, the US companies were downright conservative.

I guess that's what I'm after, more aesthetics than sound. I'm pretty convinced that with the right combination of heads, tuning and micing, you can make most drums sound pretty good, at least in a situation where you are being miced. Luckily I am most of the time and my band actually supports the weird looking drums I tend to favor.

Well, I guess it doesn't really matter now. Went to look at the satin flame set and it was in sad shape (the fuzzy Craig's List picture should have been a clue) and the other has turned up on eBay, so I've clearly missed that one. Ahh well, there will be others.

I agree...I luv those old Japanese wraps ! If you are really hip on that second kit, maybe contact the guy and ask if he would be willing to sell it with a BIN price on eBay ?

Second kit isn't that special. Red sparkle...meh. Plus he's cross posted it on CL as $350 FIRM which is $150 more than what the pawn shop was asking. It is a pretty cherry kit, I just want something with a little more character. I got another deal in the works anyway.

Now just FYI, you know that Apollo, Whitehall, Majestic, Lido, Revere, etc. are all the same drumkits, right ? So, unless you particularly want that Apollo badge, you can also be looking at those other stencil names, too...
