Anyone know of Slingerland rope tension snare drums?

Loading...

I've seen a couple blurry pics and I'm not sure if it's original or what.

The badge seems to be the "Black & Brass Cloud Chicago" used from 1928-1947 according to VDG.

Snares are missing and bottom head has a huge rip.

The ropes go through the hoops.

The catalogs on VDG don't show any rope tension marching snares.

Any ideas or info?

Thanks in advance.

I don't know much about these drum's. But i do know that S/L rope drums like the one you have looks complete.I do see that it has the leather piece's on the rope these were used to side up and down the rope's to make the head tighter..Other then that it's all i can tell you....Mikey

Could very well be an early '40s war drum when most drum manufacturers had to reduce or eliminate steel, nickel, and brass hardware. Many substituted rope tension for lugs.

At the time I decided to pass buuuuuuut I came across it again today on CL. So I bought it. The bottom head is broken (calf skin) and it's missing the strainer and snares. I will upload pics tomorrow.

Never heard of these. Most likely, this was just a converted marching drum from the 40's.

Here are more pics.

There are no extra holes in the shell.

"W669-QM-19239" is stamped inside. Could that be a model number?

"4967" is written as well. I'm not sure if that means June 7, 1949?

I'm not sure which 2 point strainer would go on it either.

Jeff

Don't know, just a guess , but the number stamp looks military to me and more than likely the "QM" refers to Quartermaster. (The military equipment dude) ..

Cheers

The only background I know on this drum is that it came from a local elementary school.

I'm trying to see if they can find out any more info.

Does anyone know where I could find out more about the numbers & stamps inside???

Resurrecting this thread! I finally decided to fix this drum up and use it.

I did more searching online and found this helpful info:

“I know that both WFL and Slingerland supplied snare drums to the Army during WWII. The Slingerlands are stamped W669-QM-19239 on the inside (which is the Army designation for the Slingerland model 634).”

This was posted in 2020 on a militaria forum. There was a picture included but it was of a rod tension drum not rope tension.

I am going to replace the heads and get some snares. I already got a strainer for it. I am going to recondition the ears. I am hoping the rope holds out.

I have dismantled the drum at this point.
