Anybody here ever removed gold leafing from a drum finish?

Sounds like a cool project! Gold hardware will look sharp on those too!! Caddy green is a neat color. Are you using lacquer or water base paints? My son ( on guitars) started with lacquer, then swtiched to water based, then back to lacquer. Water base was ok but he had some clouding on the clears which in time evaporated. And the finishes were a bit soft. Lacquer takes a long time to dry but is far more durable in the end. Good luck with everything!

We can't use lacquer in B.C. - it's banned....in California too I hear. I'm using (the painter is using) a high-end automotive paint. It's not a shiny as the original drum because the drum has a clear plastic wrap to make the paint durable and with that nice reflective shine. I'm going to see if the painter can use some kind of a clear coat over the paint to have it look more like my original tom.

I may start a Thread here and ask questions about clear coating to mock the clear plastic wrap Gretsch used back in the day.

I'm sure he can do something with the clear coat. My son does multiple coats and then buffs it out to get that miles deep clear look. Yes good idea on the new thread you might get some ideas!
