Any suggestions for removing factory labels/graphics from drum heads?

Loading...

Hey, I did a search and didn't find anything regarding this topic. I have a smooth white Remo Powerstroke 3 drum head that I'd like to try and remove the "Remo" insignia from in order to have it be a clean white head (nothing against Remo heads; I love em'). I don't know if rubbing mineral spirits or turpentine would help dissolve the graphic, or whether it would discolor the head altogether. It certainly can't be scratched off, and I may crazy for thinking it's possible, but I figured it was worth asking. Thanks!

I don't take 'em for granted for a single second.

There are a few different solvents that will perform this task.. ( and easily! ) .. my favorite is lacquer thinner. Nail polish remover is essentially the same thing and will also work as well as being READILY available almost anywhere and in a small bottle to boot! This all said...

The only heads that run no risk of damage is indeed the smooth white variety. Most of these solvents will dissolve the coated finish on coated heads as well as the graphic. There may be exceptions, but not that I have found personally.

If you want to start a bit less aggressive than acetone (nail polish remover) try either isopropanol (rubbing alcohol) or methanol (wood alcohol). Soak a rag with the solvent and plop it down on the logo. Let it stand a few minutes and then start rubbing. What works or does not work depends on the ink formulation. Work in a well ventilated area and wear gloves (alcohols and acetone will dessicate your skin).

On an uncoated plastic head sometimes a lot of hot water works too, but be prepared to scrub.

I need to do the same.. Except I have shinny gloss black Tama heads and the white lettering is flaking. These heads scratch very easy and are on the front and bottoms easily seen.

denatured or isopropanol?

Thanks.

I have used the Citrus Strip product for removing head logos with no problems.
