Any Olympic guys out there?

Loading...

I've had this snare for several years, bought it on eBay from a guy in the UK, but have never done anything with it. Moving house a few times has had it sitting in boxes or shelves, unplayed, for too long. Trouble is, I can't seem to name it or date it. I found a catalogue pic on the Vintage Drum Guide which is the closest I can find, but there's a hitch - the catalogue pic is a perfect match, except it has 8 lugs, whereas mine only has 6. I think it's a 1964 Olympic Deluxe snare, 5 1/2 x 14", but because it only has 6 lugs, I'm thinking it's an economy or student model Deluxe, or something like that.

The previous owner, I'm guessing, added the muffler, judging by the off-centredness and the low height where it's positioned. Also the drill work is pretty messy, so that says to me not factory and the work of a weekend hacker! :)

Anyway, any thoughts Gentlemen?

Sorry, this stupid iPad will only let me load one pic at a time, so multiple posts, guys...

I have this exact same snare drum. Didn't think too much of it until I shaved a snare bed, and now it's one of my personal favorites. Liked it so much, I found an 8 lug version, and bought it - good price - nice drum.

...also have the matching, 20" kick drum - Aquarian Super Kick II, sounds excellent. What info are you looking for? Olympic were Premiers, economy line from what I understand. Same birch shells, with beech re-rings. Not usually offered with the die cast hoops and higher end hardware as Premier, but still a quality drum.

Yeah, I have a couple of Premiers as well (a 60s HiFi and a 70s cheapie) and I know Olympic were a budget line, but basically I just wanted to know if the Olympic had a name and how old it is. Obviously it's a Deluxe, going by what you say. I'm going to take it out for a bash at a gig tomorrow actually, just to see what she can do.

Yeah, I noticed the snare beds on the shell are kind of weird, not quite lined up. How did you do yours?

Thanks for the info!

My 6-lug had no snare bed whatsoever. I basically just sanded the snare bed with a sanding block. Made all the difference.

Ah, well someone's done it to this one, and not very well. Probably the same guy who put the tone control for the muffler in badly. Do yours actually have mufflers, by the way? Don't know if that was factory or not...

Took a look, and mine does have a muffler - oddly enough, located next to the badge. Seems to be original, and is different than yours. Larger felt, and about 1" diameter, solid chrome knob. My 8-lug is currently at a rehearsal space, so I can't cross reference.
