Another who made this MIJ kit thread?!

Loading...

Hi all,

I've spent a few days now pouring over photos and posts here and elsewhere online trying to determine the maker of a little MIJ kit i picked up from the local flea for $20. The bass drum (20") and tom match, but the floor is different. All are red sparkle though. All three pieces have "Japan" stamped on some of the hardware. I can't find any badging or other markings of any kind. The wrap has cracked in places on the floor tom and bass drum. Drums sound pretty good all things considered. The tom and bass drums have remo sound master heads, possibly original? The floor tom has a ludwig head. Looking for any and all information as to maker id and era. Thanks in advance!

Floor tom from what I see is Pearl based on the lugs. Would need a better shot of the bass drum and tom for a better determination.

of all the Japanese kits and orphaned mij drums I have

I have only two with those exact lugs

with one of them also having the exact same mounting plate as the subject mounted tom

In both cases these drums of mine are wearing "Norma" badges

they can be seen in the pics

one is a red sparkle club date style mounted tom

almost identical to the subject tom

the other is an aqua marine sparkle snare drum

on both drums the lugs are the identical size

Of the Norma badged drums I have seen

they used three types of lugs

Most often they were Gretsch clones

these lugs here are the rarest of the three

I would imagine there are other drums with these lugs

but with badges other than Norma

but I have never seen any of them

My guess is, that is a partial Norma drum kit

with a pearl made floor tom added later

If my guess is right? there will be two small nail holes the right and left of the air holes on both drums

Thanks very much for the information!

I checked the bass and tom and upon close inspection could not find any nail holes that would correspond with the Norma badge. That the lugs and mounting plate are the same though would suggest some connection to that brand? Any idea who the actual manufacturer is and timeline? Also I'm missing one lug rod. Is this a generic part that i can just measure and swap from any other kit/brand?

Anyone else have any thoughts on bass/floor tom?

What is the identifying feature to suggest the floor tom is pearl? Any idea on timeline of production?

The lugs on the floor tom are what give it away as Pearl. They were the only company to make those particular lugs. The floor tom leg mounts are also a good indicator. Production wise I'd place them around early to mid '60s.
