Another Supra Snare

Loading...

Hello,

I went through the information on the vintage drum web site in order

to identify my snare drum but I am still not sure.

There are some details that puzzle me. I ask for some wisdom.

First:

Ludwig Supraphonic Snare (hope so)

1. Metal Shell

2. Chrome Finish

3. Mid 80's keystone badge

4. 6.5''x14''

5. Interior finish natural

6. 10 imperial lugs, steel hoops,

7. p85 strainer

8. There are extra holes near the strainer

9. A "B" is stamped close to the tone control

The color of the chrome on the shell is strange. It seems like bronze but there is a lot of pitting on the shell. Is it brass, bronze, Ludalloy or something else?

Thanks a lot!

Alex

That was quick!

The serial number is 3229699. I also forgot to say that a magnet does not

stick to the shell.

I didn't notice any marks inside the shell

Thank you

Looks like a brass Supra from here...all the wear marks showing the brass under the exterior color. A "bronze" electroplating maybe? But with the "B" stamped in the shell over the tone control, looks like brass to me.

I'd guess bronze simply because in my experience Ludwig COB snare drums don't exhibit pitting or flaking on the chrome. My experience extends more to the older era Ludwig snare drums, though. Because it is a Monroe badge, I would think the peeps at Ludwig could answer your question about the color and the "B" in short order.

Another observation is you have an amount of "splay" in the tension rods that makes me wonder if it is a mid 80s model or rather an "after early 90s" model supra, as I was told on fairly good authority that Ludwig, in the early 90s, reduced the diameter of their metal snare shells by around 1/8" to compensate for any possible head-fitting problems. That's what creates the "splay" look on their newer drums.

Thank you all for the information. Maybe it is brass after all.

I scraped one of the extra holes, and the metal is very shiny.
