Another MIJ find

Loading...

Well I looked at these and did not buy them for 100.00. They were just too bad of shape. The ft shell looked rotten, the chrome was very pitted, wrap was wrinkled. Most of the screws, mufflers or anything metal was rusty. Had to walk away!

Thank you!

Knowing when to pass on a purchase is a good thing.I passed on a mid-60's MIJ in a music store earlier this summer.13/16/22 with a matching snare in BDP-it was difficult, cause that's a color I'm really jonesin' for(my first set of Kents were BDP).The MIJ's were very thin, probably Star made, with the reinforcing wood panel inside where mounts are placed. If they had been the 9 plies w/grey interiors I could not have resisted....

Well I did purchase the Stewart kit that I posted acouple days ago for 85.00. The shells are really thin, kinda scary. But I thought it was worth it and took it home. Now looking for parts for the base drum. Do you think it would be "risky" to re wrap these? They are like three ply, super thin with rings. The shell has cracked around a few lugs.

Thank you!

The wrap is very good except for the bass drum. THere is a 4 inch long crack in the wrap and shell. It as though something was dropped on it. And there is a spot about the size of a dime that is missing (wrap only). Also, there are four holes in the shell that I dont understand. I took pictures but my camera was set on 5mega pix. I will have to re take them with the e-mail setting. Someday I need to learn how to re-size picthures. I dont have any photo editing software at the moment. I want to makethese drums usable. Right now they seem very fragile. Its like the lugs screws are close to tearing through the shell. I am sure this is just how these cheep mij drums are, just a little concerned.

Thank you!

I'd think the crack, the holes and the missing piece of wrap could be fixed with a Jonnistix-style glitter repair. And the lug screws could be backed up with thin fender washers, which come in many diameters and hole sizes.Jonnistix's repairs on these type drums are A1 in my book, especially the one where he veneered the INTERIOR of a set similar to yours. The finished product-outstanding.Where is that Okie from Muskogee......

I will contact jonnistix, I have heard of his glitter repairs from mikey777. Is this like a liquid that you pour into a crack? Sounds like fun. jonnistix (spelling?) did advise me to veneer the interior of the shell. After thinking about it, it was a stupid question whether or not to re-wrap. Looking at the drums as a whole, they look pretty nice. I want to fix em up and sell them but I want to sell them as a good strurdy playable kit not just a show peice.

Thanks, Hey I saw on your profile that you are into the old cars. My dad and I had several old cars at one time. I do still have my 1940 Ford Deluxe Coupe that I bought with my dad when I was 15. That was 34 years ago! (had to use the calculator)

Thank you!
