#$%& Crimped Snare Beds Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Just need to vent a little bit, I guess...

I found a deal on a '70s Slingerland COB snare on eBay and jumped on it. The drum's in fantastic shape and sounds great with new heads on it. This thing is a LOT louder than my Radio King! Love 'em both, but it's a very different sound.

On a side note, after asking the seller about packing and protecting the snare mechanism, he packed the drum in a practically new Nomad hard case and included it in the deal for free. Mucho good karma to that guy!

Anyway, the corners of the crimped snare beds are apparently juuuuust sharp enough to poke holes through the new Evans Hazy 200 I put on the drum. The drum came to me with a Diplomat with similar damage. Guess it's time to try a thicker head, and to give the next head a little bit more time to seat and conform to the snare bed.

I'm all out of snare side heads (except for Kevlar marching heads), so the drum sits on a shelf for the next few days until new heads arrive. *sigh*

...and now back to your regularly scheduled program.

Found the culprit: The head was getting pinched between the rim and the shell right where the snare gate is stamped into the rim, and those snare gates have a sharp edge to them. I'll have this fixed and waiting for the new head to arrive. :)

I thought about taking pics, but it's a hard pic to take. You have to look really closely into the crease between the hoop and the shell to see where the head was getting pinched. I'd need a decent macro lens and more photographic talent. ;)

I've noticed that the crimp on these snare beds seems to cause a slight flare in the bearing edge at the snare bed, at least on the two COB Slingy snares I was able to check. On both drums, you get a little bit of a "snap" sensation as you slide a head's flesh hoop over that flared lip on the shell. On my drum, that flare was enough to pinch the head between the shell and hoop, where the head got cut by a sharp burr at the edge of the snare gate.

To fix the problem, I did some really minute coaxing of the shell to reduce the extra diameter at the snare bed by about 1/16". Diameter around most of the drum is 13 7/8" and now just a hair over 14" at the snare bed. I also polished the burr on the hoop flat using a rubber abrasive wheel on a Dremel. There's still a really tight clearance between shell and rim, but I think I've eliminated the contact that damaged the head. The new head's in the mail, so I'll find out soon enough.
