American Pickers (finding drums),,,,

you have to worry about some of the "experts" too. I saw an episode of Auction Kings where some guy brought in an old Vespa with sidecar, clearly an Asian restoration (of which there are many from India, Vietnam etc) and likely to be pretty poor under the flash paint and chrome. The "expert" banged on about the history of vespa and then went on to say that the bike in question was very original and worth something like $7k or some such. The sidecar was not original along with most of the accessories and the paint job and who knows what else. It sold to some grinning impulse buyer who would be in for a world of pain unless it was to just be a display piece.

It would be like someone taking in an old Rogers set with a modern tom mount, re-wrapped, modern spurs etc, and some "expert" saying it was a lovely original kit worth about $3k. At least it wouldn't fall apart at 60mph and kill you I guessFalling Do

I watch that all the time and also "Storage War's" waiting for someone to find that mint cased up vintage 'Camco" set, or Cane and Tophat kit. I did see one guy find a Ludwig set and there were actually some other vintage WMP orphans they did not even address. He took them to Stewert Copelands house of "The Police" and he valued them for him. It was a more recent Ludwig kit worth about $1000.00 but he did tell the guy, hey, I will give you $40 cash right now for that cymbal and was pointing to a ride and after the deal he said it was the holy grail of ride cymbals and he had been looking for one for years. He never mentiond brand or anything but I think it was a istanbul k.

I saw the one with Stewart Copeland. That was a Ludwig accent kit worth about $300 but your right there was a WMP FT and 2 other snares.

Yeah, and did anybody besides me think he (SC) made over those Ludwigs way too much? I was disappointed...

I had forgotten about the WMP ones in the show. Well, maybe it's best if the general public just looks at old drums as "junk." I've sure got a lot of good deals and made a lot of people happy by "rescuing" and then repairing/refurbishing/restoring someone else's "junk."

Fuse -- I appreciate your detailed input!

Gawd...I've seen at two separate times on American Pickers where they walk/crawl over old bass drums.....maybe to reach for a can of oil...not even to mention the drum/drums!

My wife even said once "hey that's a drum!" - don't they pick those?? haha.

A couple of weeks ago, answered a CL ad. Got to the storage locker, bought a set of '68 Ludwigs, red sparkle, 12/13/16/22/14, an old 15" zildjian, and 18" 602 paiste. Locker owner wanted $100.00 for the lot. I gave it to him!

That WMP floor tom was an MIJ...probably a Star built drum. But Stuart DID play and then sign them, so it would have added to Barry's earnings.

From Purdie Shuffle

I think people in the industry, who make their living buying/selling the contents of storage lockers, or pickers. will tell you that these programs have ruined their business. The guys who work storage lockers suddenly find themselves competing with crowds of amateurs who inflate prices beyond reason. I don't know about you, but I hope they never stop or pick up an old drum and discuss value on-air. The very next day, every wahoo with a dollar and a dream of avarice will become your new competition in the marketplace. Trust me, they won't have the same values and sensitivity we have for the instrument. You think a lot of great old drums are being chopped apart for profit now... wait till the word gets out.Mums the word!John

Right on!

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.
