Am I missing a rim? Ludwig Pioneer Snare Last viewed: 1 day ago

Loading...

Posted last Friday..how I got this drum kit free from a neighbor..and its my summer project. Ive started little by little....and Im to cleaning up the snare. It didn't have the top batter, but had the hoop. Im new to vintage drums...and just seems like the hoop goes down way to low.

The reverse side has a silver metal rim underneath the hoop.

I just wonder if it got lost? was there ever one at all? I did ebay search..and just see hoops for these type vintage Ludwig snares..

thanks!

No, The silver metal ring belongs to the batter head, you have the bottom hoop, if you have the screws for it, all you are missing is the bottom head that`s attached to the shiny metal rim !i

The hoop pushes on the rim to tighten the head, otherwise you couldn`t install the head !i

Take off the top head and you`ll see how it`s made and how it works !i

The best way to learn is to disassemble the drum and put it back together. that`s what I did to my first drummer for her first lesson.

I don`t suggest you remove the thing with the lever and knob, (throw-off) But do suggest you remove the "wires" to learn that process, it`s very important to know how to work the throw-off because it matters with the overall sound of the drum !i

Take your time and ask here for questions, there are plenty of good people here to talk you through it !i

Yes that is the rim of the head like Oddball said. Also, the rim of the head should fit inside of the bottom flange of the drum rim. It looks like yours is butted against the outer part of the flange. I can't tell if it's just because it's loose or you have a problem with the drum rim or the rim of the head is too big to fit but it should fit inside the flange. Here's a pic borrowed from elsewhere on this site incase you're unsure how they're supposed to fit.

I had the pic upside down..so maybe they see what im talking about....the snare side is fine...has a metal rim....never seen that on any drum before...but Im missing a metal rim on the batter side. Person selling one to me said they only came with the pioneer Ludwig models.
