I have and have had several MIJ steel shelled snares.....but someday will be adding an Acrolite (or one of those Supralites!).
What I am wondering, is whether Pearl, Star/Tama ever decided to get into the aluminum shell game.
I am not positive that the "Luddalloy" is pure aluminum (something tells me NO).....but that can be a sidebar I suppose.
Anything come into mind (MIJ)?
I don't know about vintage history.. but Yamaha, Tama & Pearl have each dabbled with Aluminium shell snares & some of those are still currently available..

Of course I am familiar with the Slingerland aluminum snare from the 60s on up.
Wonder which would be better, that or an Acrolite? Both about the same price I suppose.
I see alot of modern MIJ ones - more interested in Vintage MIJ. Perhaps they did not get into the Aluminum mix until the last 10-20 years?
Much as I love Slingerland... I'd look out for the Acro..

I own one (and love the sound of it, it's the one I'm playing preferably).
Heard from others (NOT one single opinion only) that it can stand easily against the Acro.
Coming back to your question: I don't think that aluminium shells were something to think about back in the 60's.

The problem with the Premier is the COST. I don't know what it is like over on your side of the pond but Premier 2000s go for alot more than an Acrolite.
BTW - you see the Star Hihat stand on Ebay (started a thread about it) 80 views, finally sold. It was killing me not to buy it! But in the end decided I would only be able to justify buying it if I was going to build an entire set of Vintage Star hardware - which I was not.

I see. The price for a Prem 2000 with a VGC shell (= with almost no pitting at all) will be around EUR 120 - 180 over here.

Yes, that's a very good hihat stand.
I remember that I had the latest Star hihat model, the one with the engraved Star logo in the plate - it also had that small knurled wheel at the bottom of the vertical pipe, enabling you to adjust the spring tension.
