all that rust

Loading...

hi there.

i just got my "new" ludwig 1966 kick in champagne sparkle. stunning color. so now i'm on the case of restoring the poor thing. normally no problem, but:

when i was screwing away the lugs i saw a couple of really rusted screws (see picture) the problem is: they (5 screws) do not move anymore, and i guess i'll never be able to move them because all the profile is gone, the screws are just rust. i already tried pliers (i guess thats the english word for STRONG SCISSORS :-) ) but that won't work either. CryBaby

has anybody had problems like that before? what should i do? leave them alone and remove as much rust as possible to save the rest? as i'm afraid to damage anything that's my choice so far. but i'm thankful for any input on this matter.

thanks (again)

If a socket wrench (http://images.jupiterimages.com/common/detail/08/49/22844908.jpg) doesn't work and the sides of the hex screws are ruined anyway, I recommend this:

A little drop of penetrating oil (I love WD-40) and a pair of vice-grips....like this:

should do the trick....WD-40 fixes everything!

You will need to buy some replacement screws on EBay...maybe even two new lugs, too -very easily obtainable.

POP Quiz... what does the WD stand for in WD-40...?? no googling now;)

Are you familiar with a device called an easy-out?? Hit the local hardware get the guy to set you up with a small drill bit and some easy-outs.

These little guys reverse thread into a small pilot hole you drill in the top of the head and then you just back the screw out with a t-handle. Works like a champ.

http://shop.blasterchemical.com/display.cfm?p=50003&pid=4 this is what I always used on my "68 Falcon. Till WD-40 became the standard in every tool box.

Not a Guru... just interested..

WD -40 means water displacement formula #40 a persistent chemist eh?

file or dremel the screw head and recreate the phillips or slot head.

A points file is perfect
