Alex Van Halen Tribute kit - 11 pieces -1981/82

Loading...

Ok, I'm re-posting this because I couldn't download pictures at the time, but here is the kit. The only weird thing is and a shame is the 16 and 18 are solid white. I was told that the original owner bought the kit this way, not sure what happened on the floor toms? Some guy said he had never heard of this type of kit and said "prove it with pics!" I know this is not a kit that Alex actually used. The shells are wraps and I was told Ludwig made a limited number of "tribute" kits that tied in with their Fair Warning Tour in 1981. Very cool kit I think....they just need some TLC. Sizes are

8"..10"..12"..13"..14"...15"..16"..18" and two 22" bass drums. Power toms with black/white badging (1980-81 production). I tried to re-post or attach the original thread on this but had no luck. There were several people who chimed in on this, can someone re-post that thread?

If they have the "granitone" spray inside they would be rocker II.

Rocker drums at one point had all small classic lugs and natural finish inside. But variations are constantly seen.

I don't recally 18" rocker II floortoms being available.

Nice looking kit.

i never heard of a avh tribute kit or seen it in a catalog. my old boss worked for ludwig and avh and he never mentioned a tribute kit either.

anyone have more info on the kit? maybe a pic in a calalog or magazine ad?

here's a old pic of my avh poster plus others from the period from different angles.

Looks like a custom rewrap or excellent paint job done on an existing Rockers kit that was either black or white.. It can easily be done.. It would also explain why the floors weren't black and white..

I have a drum kit made up of orphans, and the tom and kick are Rockers, with granitone coating and b/w badges, sporting classic lugs..

CLUBDATE 64-- Ludwig did have Rockers shells in 18".. Follow this link then scroll down to the black kit..

Ludwig anomalies are everywhere during certain decades, in particular early 70's through to about early 80's..My guess is that there were many custom orders during that time, which would explain a certain type series of kit missing this or that, or having things that weren't supposed to be there in the first place.

To my knowledge , not a tribute kit done by Ludwig, because there aren't any in any catalog of that era..Someone is either blowing smoke or you may have been misinformed.. Still , it is a very nice looking kit..

Yeah...I agree with you guys. These are rocker 2's because they have the granitone finish on inside. As far as being painted....no way, you can see the edge of the wrap, in fact, the wrap on one of the bass drums is starting to bubble. I bought these because Van Halen is my favorite band and I thought they looked cool. The floor toms bothered me somewhat but for $600.00 for 11 pieces...what the hell? Now, about sound, they sound fair but they have old heads, not tuned perfectly, but on a PA, they sound great. I'm gonna tear em' down, clean them, re-do bearing edges, new heads and see what happens. Oh, and to stay true to 1981, the old school black dot heads for sure that Alex used. I'll sink another $1,000.00 in these probably but what a cool kit for a Van Halen tribute band! Now I only have to find a Eddie Van Halen and a guy or girl to cover David Lee Roth's attempt to "sing". DLR is what he is.....you either love him or hate him. IMO...he can't sing for ****! Have you guys heard any takes from their last tour? He sounds horrible AND he chokes the whole groove of the sound down by running his mouth at random. The only song IMO that he actually sings well is "dance the night away", the rest are just screaming and BS, but it worked at the time. Fair warning CD....no band can touch it!!!! There's some dude on youtube that can rip the hell out of any Van Halen song. The clips never shows his face but man can he nail every single note. Van Halen tribute band in Atlanta.....I think that will work!! Hell, any of you guys want to play my drums in this band and get paid $2,000 a gig.(split four ways=$500.00 each) plus tips and free drinks....drummer has to stay sober and I'll be the manager to round up the ladies. Three sets at 45 minutes each. And, you must nail "hot for teacher" and do the famous Alex 4 split solo atband2 the end of last set( same as a Bonzo triplet except you add another beat from bass drum creating a 4 beat groove that starts really fast then slows down to a stall.)
