Ajax snare

I saw one today for $150. Its 5" birch shell. Should I? Or is it worth less? Very light drum covered with what looks similar to marine pearl. Condition is good with no pitting. Premier type tuning screws and what look like die cast hoops. Narrow snare wires....maybe 12 or so.

That depends - on a lot of things, actually: age, condition, model... even locality, i.e. European drums are often more expensive in the US than over here. Still, it sounds a bit pricey, but I can't help without pics/more info.

A very nice old drum - I would say it's worth all of $150 easy.

That looks like a 1950s Ajax Piper drum - a very nice model, indeed. There should be a 5-digit stamp somewhere inside. Birch shell with re-rings, a parallel-type strainer, die-cast hoops and slotted rods. If all the parts are present and original, it is definitely worth $150 :)

Hi,

I went to the place that has it today. The drum is not very sensitive. It could use new wires and possibly a diplomat snare side would help. It's a neat drum. I like the quality. Nice hoops and over all good to fair condition for a drum as old as this one.

Any other information would be helpful... like year, updated price (with new pictures)and model. I don't think it's a Piper snare because of the strainer but I don't know for sure. Others will I'm sure.

Wow! Nice score! She's a beauty! I'm sure once you get new heads on there and dial her in she'll sound great. I had a snare of those dimensions w/ re-rings recently and I put a really thin old Ludwig snare side head on it and it came back to life.
