Ajax snare - leatherette wrap!

Loading...

Hello again!

Many thanks for all the help identifying the damper and as a result, I have just got hold of a John Grey damper which seems to do the job perfectly.

I came about as a result of my collection of a JG Autocrat 14x5 COB - what a beauty! - and the seller had a JG Autocrat 14x5 wood shell - without lugs - but with a damper (and blue rectangular badge) - which they wished to get rid of.

You can see from the 'installation' pic that there were quite a few holes drilled into the shell to accommodate both the Carton as well as the original damper.

So it seems the leatherette is a definite no-no, also according to the vendor of both the above - so - Arctic Oyster? Purple Diamond?

The Arctic Oyster is a Delmar wrap , which came out about 2 or 3 years ago. Precision had it, as does St . It had a very short run as a wrap and if you ever think you might complete a kit in it, it may be impossible to find.

I did an Olympic Discus snare drum in it and although it looks o.k. and the customer likes it; I can't say I liked it . Maybe an entire kit would look good but the little thin snare would have been better served with a more reserved wrap. Black Oyster would have looked better.

I'd go with the Purple Diamond on this one. Ajax did use diamond finishes although , purple probably wasn't one of the colours.
