Ajax 14x8 snare drum - help needed!

Loading...

Hi all,

I'm hoping to get some information on this snare drum that I acquired recently. I can't find much info on the big ajax snares and I don't know too much about them.

This thing was pretty dirty when I got it, the insides were covered with white powder, cleaned up ok though.

The snares hook onto the strainer which I haven't seen before. I don't know if i'll be able to find any new snares that will fit, puresound don't seem to make any that are suitable anyway.

The shell seems pretty strange too, it kind of concaves around the drum I don't know if this is how all the big ajax snares were built. I thought maybe it had been dropped or something but the concave pattern goes right around the drum so I don't know.

I think i'm gonna have some trouble finding parts for this baby, i'd rather not have to put on a new strainer but I think I might have to - I'd rather play the thing than sit and look at it!

Any help / info is greatly appreciated!

Theres an ajax snare on vintagedrumguide that looks to have the same strainer with a cover.

[COLOR="DarkRed"]That's really, really friggin' cool. especially the amphora-like shape of that shell..i would agree, it's intentional.

Regaring the throwoff...man, yeah, it'd be great to find one...wondering if in the meantime you can just replace it with one which has the same mount hole spacing so you don't have to drill add'l holes.

Thanks Jaye.

Yeah i'm yet to take off the throwoff but hopefully I can get something to fit the existing holes. I'm hoping this baby sounds as classy as she looks! first big snare i've owned.

Nice!!! Lovely wrap too!

Ajax are nice sounding drums. I got one of the shallower types recently and am gigging it at the moment - sounds good! Don't think it's as old as this one - that badge loks pretty ancient!

hello. your snare dates to just after ww2. i have 'pyramid' badge (1935-39) ajax drums with serial numbers from 99nn - 195nn. earlier ajax drums were 'winged roundal' badges (hawkes & son before boosey merger) and mine has serial number 85nn. after the war the oval badge was used, then the blue square badge.

the barrel shape is not intentional, it is a result of over-tightening.

the holes in the top hoop and 8" depth suggest this is a marching drum.

I have one that was really really smashed up when I got it hence the major refurb - date inside is 1950

Hello everyone!

I've tried contacting the member who originally posted this article, but no reply! Anyone know him? I have a matching 1940s Ajax kit missing the snare! I'd love to make him an offer for it, so if any of you know him personally, maybe you could put us in touch!

many thanks!

sorry, can't help there. Seems he wasn't around long. I'd love to see the kit if you have photos though

I have just picked up a very similar snare (not sure if it is 14x7 or 14x8 yet) but I am told it is a Jack Parnell. Photos to follow.
