Advice Repairing '65 BDP Floor Tom

Loading...

I have been restoring my father's old 5-Piece Slingerland kit for a couple of years. I learned to play on these things and they are in near perfect condition. The drum kit looks excellent on the exterior. Lately I've noticed that the floor tom has absolutely no resonance. I have been using Remo Pinstripes but it sounded as though I was banging on a trash can. I took the heads off to inspect the inside and found quite a few cracks. The bottom of the top rim looks terrible.

I was wondering if you think that I should fill in the cracks with a maple color wood putty, which would probably be obvious but I would like to get the sound back without hurting the value of these drums. Advice please

This is a common thing for Slingerland interiors. Many times it is just a surface issue with the ply or the way it was constructed.

Have you tried putting heads on the drums like a Remo Coated Ambassador? to see how the drum sounds?

Are the interior issues something that you have not noticed before, or is it happening now because of temperature or humidity where they are being played?

I would see if the heads are still good and or stretched-out and replace them with another head. See if you can try a few different heads to get a better tone and or sound out of the drum.

Maybe the tuning and or the room are changing the sound of the drum also.

My guess is that interior issue is not affecting the tone that much and are just part of the drum and its history and other factors are at play with the sound of the drum.

Well I really got the drums back to great condition several years ago. I played them a lot for about 3 years and then they sat in the house for another 3 years. I don't think it is the room because every other drum sounds great.

You may be right about the heads being stretched. I didn't really think about it but I had the set covered and stacked in a corner of the room for 3 years with both toms being stacked on top of the Floor Tom.

I'll go buy all new heads tomorrow and see how it sounds. Do you think the cracks are something that I should address though?

I will post some pics of the whole set as soon as I can get everything back together. I've been cleaning every part for the last few days. I want these drums to stay in tip top shape and my major concern is that last picture of the missing piece on the rim. I want them to be perfect, sound perfect and retain a lot of value.
