Advice on early '70's Vintage Orange Ludwig kit

Loading...

Hi there - i can get a early 70's Ludwig kit in that John Densmore orange wrap, which I have always loved but they are very scarce here in South Africa. This is the first one that I have ever seen for sale here. The price tag is average (in the region of USD 680) but there are some condition issues. I also will have to buy blind and ship as the kit is about 1000 kilometers from where I live. The snare is heavily pitted, which I know is an issue with the Supras, but the damage to the wrap is more of a concern to me. Please have a look at the pics enclosed - especially the damage to the floor tom wrap worries me as it appears to maybe be water related. What do you guys think? The seller tells me that the shells show no water marks. Do you guys think that these blemishes could be indicative of some abuse? Would you buy the kit and if so, at what price.

Thanks guys and have a great day,

Regards

Erik

If you like "projects", as I do, then go for it. But that is not a project price.

That wrap is too far gone to rescue in my opinion. I would pass, especially from a blind buy perspective.

Hi Erik!

Mod Orange kits can usually command higher prices. As I've always said, condition is everything...and this kit has seen better days! I agree with John/Levelpebble above, that this is a project kit, but not a project price!

The wrap splitting issue may be from age and temperature changes from where the drums were stored. What are the tom and bass drum sizes? A Densmore kit would have 8x12 and 14x14 toms, with a 14x20 bass drum.

Yes, due to the scarcity of these kits in your area, you should still consider it, but try to negotiate a better price based on condition.

Let us know if you are able to obtain this kit and keep us informed on the restoration progress. Good luck!

Buy them for the price you think is fair ,clean them up, and enjoy them, definitely a players kit, that is if the seller honestly considers the condition of the kit.

Hi Erik!

I noticed that you also posted this over at DFO and got some great advice from K.O. I'd go with what he said!

HI Mark,

Indeed. I am definitely taking his advice and will walk away from the deal. It's just not worth the risk.

Cheers

Erik
