This is a Ludwig SS snare I picked up very cheaply on ebay recently.

It's been converted to a regular throw-off (unfortunately Tama DOH) and is very badly pitted as you can see.

What would be the best DIY way of removing the pitted chrome and generally tidying the drum up?

I've found a great post on here (link below) where someone had the chrome removed professionally and then just polished the shell. Looks pretty darn good I think. I'd like to try to remove the pitted chrome myself and polish. I've read about using razor blade edges/stanley knife blades to remove chrome and then using 0000 steel wool. Is this the best option and what product should I use to actually polish the bare shell?
