Advice needed - beautiful vintage Yamaha DT-225

Loading...

Hi all, new to the site and to restoring vintage drums!

Any vintage Yamaha experts in the crowd? Have I got a million questions for you! I picked up what I'm 90% sure is a Yamaha DT-225 set in brown willow pearl from late 60s/early 70s, in pretty great condition all things considered. Two 12" mounted toms, a 16" floor, and a 20" bass with wood hoops. Not a museum piece, and there's a couple missing screws and the floor tom is missing its reso hoop. Someone also drilled one of the 12" toms for a new tom mount, but at least the original mounting plate covers the new holes.

But the wrap is AMAZING and in great condition with no noticeable fade and only a little rash, the bearing edges are fantastic, I haven't found any rust yet, no pitting whatsoever, and everything seems to be original. I'm really in love with this wrap, too. Who do I ask around here for some more info on dating, etc? Different sources have told me different shell types as well. Plus, just in general, what do y'all think about these kits? Anyone else have one?

Also sorry for the poor light, I'll take better pictures when it's all cleaned up.

I don’t do mij but it’s very nice

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Very nice. Yes, DT-225...

The MIJ experts might be able to provide more detailed info about the shells.

I hope Kenwood chimes in. He's probably THE guy on MIJ drums around here, but others are knowledgeable too. Great wrap. I love the colors. I wish a set with a rare wrap like that would come my way.

Very cool kit!

Stop stringing and tuning your instrument, make music now.

I wish Yamaha would bring back this finish! But yeah, it's a lovely set. Not sure I'll be able to hold on to it, which is a bummer...
