Abex or Ascend by CP?

Loading...

I recently picked up a few older cymbals and am wondering if anyone has any information about them or the companies beyond what I know so far.

One set is an older 14" hi-hat set by Abex. I understand these cymbals are Italian made and that Abex was one of several pre-UFIP brands of Italian cymbals. Anybody know anything more about Abex?

The second cymbal is marked "Ascend by CP" and "18" CRASH/RIDE" in black paint on the top and "Made in Italy" in black on the bottom. I have been told by the seller the cymbal is B8 alloy. I know CP stands for Cosmic Percussion, a brand made by Latin Percussion. Latin Percussion's information guy told me the cymbals were over 20 years old and before his time but he knows they were provided to Latin Percussion by Paiste. Anybody know anything about Ascend by CP?

Any information is appreciated!

Super old thread, but I'm only digging up because I have a little info. I'm not familiar with Ascend, but Abex was made by Tosco in the 1970's for the Meisel Drum Co. USA. They were all of B8 alloy. This of course was before Tosco was taken over by Sabian and eventually closed down. Interestingly enough, the lathing seems very similar to the professional Tosco cymbals of that time.

In my opinion, they actually sound pretty good for cheap hats. Dark, sandy, and a little on the dry side.

Never seen a flat ride from them. Have you? That would be an interesting development since Abex seems to have had a very limited run, being that they were student pies. I've run across several set of hats, and they appear to be all of the same weights.
