Abandoned: Japanese Mercury Kit & Drum Room Contents

Loading...

wild thing: work colleague who knows I like old drums contacts me to go to her basement - husband left her 5 years ago when she found out he had another family in the US (Im in Canada) - so he just walked when caught and never returned and left all his drum stuff in their (now her) basement - wanted it finally cleared out: got a Japanese 60s/70s U.S. Mercury Pro drum kit in Oyster Black Peal in near mint shape (he was original owner) with original hats which Im keeping as they sound like asian -sounding splashes, 3 '70s cymbals (22/18/17), 6 various cymbal stands, Pearl hi hat stand with 70s Zil. new beats hi hats, vintage Camco pedal, 40 pairs of various sticks/brushes/mallets, high end throne, set of 3 large roto toms (14/12/10) with stand, a 60s luddy acrolyte snare, metronome, mic and stand, travel cases for stands and cymbals, drum books/CDs, few other bits - she said she just wanted it out - I offered her 100 bucks and loaded up my car.

What's up with Japanese stencils: I put the Mercury on local buy and sell - within hours had 4 inquiries - someones coming tomorrow - I know Japanese vintage is a bit in vogue now but still surprised - the kit sounds pretty good but the 12 and 20 don't project all that much but sound decent when at the drivers seat, especially the 16 - its the highlight and sounds great period - pretty beefy tone and even timbre - has ringless shells and round bearing edges.

What a score!

I think you are crazy to sell that kit:

1) near mint - especially since you have matching original hardware and cymbals, etc.

2) (you think it sounds good now....) they sound great once setup correctly:

-make sure edges are true, sanded a bit to smooth

-install new heads and tune to the shell

-I recommend using studio rings

-also recommend an Aquarian SKI on the BD batter side & wood hoops

3) Once you do this and see what all the rage is about, you will understand and then be part of the MIJ enthusiast club.....yes - something to that.

You see, they sound much better than they did when new because they have dried out, we have better head technology, & we know more about shell trueness and tuning.

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

thanks so much - I decided to sell the kit - the buyer who showed up turned out to be a friends daughter's boyfriend, and is studying jazz drumming in university - he was pretty happy to load that baby in his car and got a near mint vintage kit for a few hundred dollars - Drummerjohn333 I passed on all your suggestions!!!

Just pass those suggestions on to that youngin'! He will love it....perfect person to own it other than you! What a thrill and he will cherish it forever! Please always encourage him to keep it. If he ever sells it he will likely regret it - as is true for so many on here about their old MIJs in their early years .
