Both photos were taken at Ft. Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas around 1922.

Harrabey - Thank you! I get the impression that your dad was pretty hip for his day!

My dad joined the Army at the end of WWI....ended up in the West Point Band....traveled the world after his discharge playing on ocean liners like The Queen Mary for twenty years and ended up in Miami in the '40's....didn't get married until the age of 45 and I'm the sole result......he lived a cool life.

I have many of the vintage parts shown in those pictures but the crown ***el is my 1923 Black Beauty (sadly chromed in the 1960's.)

Harrabey - Those must have been great days because folks like your dad could make a decent living in music. I kind of grinned when I read what vintagemore2000 (please VM2000 don't take ofense) wrote about being rich because your dad had those fine drums, business must have been good! These days the common perception of "able to make a living" in music has changed. I grinned as a hi five for your dad!

510, my friend no offense taken, No my statement was from the fact that harrabey's father was playing only top of the line equipment and very nice tailored clothes and on the queen mary, for the price of his drum kit it would almost of bought a car back then if not being able to, wait for the next series of pics Harrabey sent me,?

vintagemore2000 - That's what is so cool about it, a "society" type musician could make that kind of money back then. Professional tools were probably priced for pros like him. Playing the joints wasn't always as lucrative, and might have been looked down on, in comparison.

Musicians were known to dress in some of the finest the world had to offer, until things moved on in the 60s and beyond. I think Miles was just carrying on a tradition. Man I gotta get me some new threads. Ha,ha,ha...

I look forward to seeing those other photos!

Thanks VM!

I'm really glad I started this thread...didn't realize the interesting insight you all have given...a few thoughts......single, traveling the world, good-looking ,talented and great drums: you might think he had everything---except a wife and child! When he "settled down" and got a steady day job along with his music work, he insisted that I go to college and become something other than a drummer even though he taught me to play at three...(I ended up doing both)...he knew the life of a musician had its ups and many downs....I now appreciate what he was trying to instill in me...I had a career in education, steady music work and most importantly a family starting at 21 instead of 45.....many young musicians do not realize that only a few can make a real living in the music business and the glamour quickly fades away.
