A snare as a tom/ anyone ever done this?

Loading...

I met a dude a few months back that was using a snare as a floor tom, with the snares off...

Ive been thinking that if I could acquire a rogers 15x12 snare I could take the snares off and use it as a floor tom, has anyone else ever used a marching snare or any king of big snare as a tom or floor tom?

Used a 14x7 slingy snare as a tom back in the day when you couldn't have enough toms. Won't do it now. I'd think a 15x12 would be fine.

Nothing special here but I like them.

Kook,

There are quite a few guys here that have converted marching snares and tenor drums to floor toms. Typically they use the 12x15. I have a Slingerland TDR that I started some time ago but have not had the chance to finish simply due to time.

You would probably recut the bottom edge to remove the snare beds, however, many of these drums were built for gut snares and may not have snare beds. Of course the first thing to do would be to experiment with tuning to see if you could get a satisfactory tom sound while still leaving the snare system intact. That would give you a really cool "ballad snare" if that worked. That would be a cool left side drum addition.

I have 2 Clubdate floor toms that are converted parade drums. They work and sound fine.

Look up Chris Dave on youtube & you'll see a masterclass in jazz/hip-hoppish drumming, so much so you'll probably want to quit, using a snare arsenal that will leave you wetting yourself. I don't know of a badder drummer on the planet - he could play wet, dead cats with toothpicks & wooden legs better than anyone I know.

delve further at your own risk as it depresses me to watch & listen ... I just can't help myself!!!

Hobbs - He's playing a (fast) half-time shuffle! Very cool stuff.

The original clubdate floor toms from the early 60's were 15x12. Part of their 22-13-15 setup, later changed to 20-12-14. So Ludwig has done it.

When you wanted to play a "trap set" in Jr. High band you would take the old 26" WFL bass drum attach a kick pedal, put the 5x14 supra next to it and put one of the 10x14" marching snares on a stand with the snares switched off. And of course add the 22" suspended zildjian for a ride.

That's what the jazz band used up until they got a Japanese Continental 5pc set.

And by the way, while impressively that drumming on mezzo was, Why have a drummer when the bass player is holding the whole thing down?

W O W ........ those cats are burnin! That is a VERY dangerous video......a fierce time sucker! The Band -----> tone masters, chop masters, ultra-controlled dynamics, tasty tasty licks...... sure would hate to follow them on a bill!

....and look (listen) a drummer using an effects pedal (delay) imagine that! Thinking out of the box there.

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!
