A Slingerland project

My Black and gold Duco Slingys: 14x28 Bass with all brass Chicago Badge;

7 1/2 ( I think, maybe 8) x14 snare-same badge, clamshell strainer; 7x10 tom with no badge, but Slingerland is stamped on the lug washers. I've had these since 1974 or so- they were a friend's dad's kit. I don't know if the dad ever got the money I gave the kid. These drums were positively ancient back then to a kid who was drooling over the OctaPlus kit in the Ludwig catalog. Over the years they've been ignored, maltreated, moved around, and apart from the snare, hardly played. I've been meaning to get these tubs cleaned up and playable for a while, and by golly, this is the summer to get it done. I've been lurking (and learning) on this forum long enough, thought I'd share my project. "Pictures!" I hear people say. I'm gonna start with the bass, which I'm working on right now. I'll try (edit-can't seem to from IPad- will try from computer tomorrow) to upload photos in this message and then throw some rehab questions out in another post.

Cheers,

Bardford

Your snare drum is more than likely a 7x14".Looking forward to the pics

Here's a few pics. I took the hoops off & painted them this weekend. Radio King calf head on batter side. The drum hasn't had a reso head on it for decades. Check the dirt inside the lugs where there was no tension rod. Fairly big ding on the bearing edge, & there is some delamination of the lacquered shell there - I'm thinking I might try to find an appropriate piece of black wrap or veneer to fit in there. The spur mounts are missing something, but I'm not sure what. A wing nut? I do have the spurs. I'm not sure where that extra sloppy black paint came from - can't remember if it was there when I got it. Maybe it was happy hour in the paint booth at the factory that day...

Anyway, I'll clean this puppy up & play it. Any comments, hints appreciated.

The paint wouldn't have left the factory like that, the leg mounts are missing a wing nut. the ply separation is a normal and an easy fix. the paint is black gold duco. the bass drum badge is a 50's badge. and is a Radio king bass drum. the two extra holes in the shell are from a light fixture to heat the calfskin heads, to keep them in tune.

Thanks VM2000. Would the wingnuts be anything special, ie. look like the T-rod handle?

I was thinking about trying to remove that paint splotch, but I'd probably end up doing more damage. It's kind of unsightly, but I don't mind it too much. Kind of like a really odd tattoo. About those extra holes - at one point the local music store guy sold me two Supreme toms, kind of green bowling ball wrap, and he installed a mount for the ride tom. You can just barely see the rash from that tom in the first picture. I thought about plugging those up and trying to match the finish, but nah, I'll just leave them. I'm younger than that drum, and I have more aftermarket holes in me than it does.

Gonna add some photos of the duco snare and tom. Tom is a concert with a hoop mount, and is not badged. Dunno what happened to the original lugs, but I've found some replacements.

Your Radio king snare drum is sweet, the tom was more than likely a tacked bottom tom? I'll find you a pic of the t handle you need for the spur mount.

I think the snare is a student model? There is no engraving on the hoops. It's a little out of round, and a bit out of square, if that makes sense. A number of years ago I had a drum tech fellow redo the bearing edges, so it's a tad shallower than original. I'll re-measure it when I have some time. The repro throw handle came from Emory at drumatix.com. Puresound snare wires, but i have the originals (at least the ones that were on it when i got it) kicking around somewhere.

Yes, I thought there might've been a head tacked on the bottom of the tom, but there isn't any evidence of tack holes. I've looked through the Slingerland catalogs (catalogues in this part of the world), and I can't seem to find anything similar from the fifties.
