A rare acrylic bird!

Good morning, brothers!

Let me present you this new toy of mine - acrylic Amati bass drum! It's a rare bird indeed, I've seen only one in last few years and it was this one, 'bout a year back. I used to despise acrylic drums - when I first saw the Fibes jellybean kit, I was filled with disgust - plastic see-through drums?! Belch! Thanks to this forum, though, and to [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAcwvBD6rA8&feature=my_liked_videos&list=LLRmfX0AZRCj6rwYLXS6Z9jQ"]this Pink Floyd performance[/ame], my opinions changed quite a bit.

So when I saw this BD for sale again, I immediately wrote the seller. He was tricky. I had to pay more than we settled on first, because he insisted on selling other garbage along with it (homemade cymbal and tom holder, some cracked HH cymbal and trashed 10" Amati bonga from the 80s), but I still think I made quite a deal, because of rarity of this drum. 80 dollars - not bad, eh?

It's welded from two pieces of plexiglass - tom holder bracket is inserted right into the seam electricit. It is a "concert BD" as it has no hardware on the reso side. No edge there, too - not that the bearing edge on the batter side was anything special. It's basically flat there, too! It has some dings, scratches and few cracks in the shell - nothing on any of edges, so I hope they won't spread.

It sounds quite nice, though, with a clear PinStripe head and some muffling. I think I'll be putting some Hydraulic head on it in the future. I plan to leave it at our summer cottage - it should be immune to frost and humidity, right? And I won't have to drag a BD there any time I want to play there.

Hehe, great find indeed. I didn't know that Amati made those..

Are you gonna leave it like that (just one side headed), or do some

modification? I bet you can find a lot Amati parts.

Anyway super cool drum!!!!

Greetings from Serbia!

Marko.

Thanks, Marko!

I think I'll leave it as it is, I don't want to modify it, since it's so scarce.

It is somewhat a mystery - maybe acrylic Amatis were made only for export to Western bloc or just for a really short period of time? Who knows? I'm on a hunt for toms, but I doubt I'll find any in near future.

Oh and one more thing - one of the previous owners was apparently elvish. Can anybody read Tengwar runes?

Far out drum! You may want to be careful with drum if it's cold. I saw a guy bringing in ludwig vistalites( early winter in Penna USA) from his van to drum show. He barely nugged it while stacking and crack! A piece went up in the air; it "exploded" some how bumping up against another drum. I think they got cold and brittle. It was not a funny site, it got really quiet around him afterwards.

I don`t wanna say this but, ...I`m gonna...

...The location of the tom mount and chips on the edges suggests to me that this was cut down !!...I hope I`m wrong !!

I just think that the mount should be closer to the batter edge and not out where the weight will deform the roundness !!

Hmm... I don't think so.

It's 14 inches deep. Amati never made deeper BDs until late 80s, when they made a couple of 16" deep BDs (those were virgin, because they came with a huge, massive rack for toms - quite rare pieces, too).

If it had been cut, then it would have to be originally deep like 18"-20" inches, because now there are no holes for lugs. Let's assume they made 16" deep "concert BD." Then the leg mounts positioning wouldn't be right.

The tom mount was always positioned like this.

It may seem like research short-cut, but let's just assume that Amati engineers were kinda dumb. Various other construction setbacks would point to that, too. Violin

That makes sence, if it`s 14 then my thearoy is out !! You would need to add at least 5 inches to make a reso. side. But this may explain why they didn`t make many of them !!

Very nice find, buddy! Cool1

I just love that shade of green!

Now go get yourself a Pinstipe or Controlled Sound (they look awesome on acrylics!). I`m really curious how an acrylic concert BD sounds like.
