Good morning, brothers!
Let me present you this new toy of mine - acrylic Amati bass drum! It's a rare bird indeed, I've seen only one in last few years and it was this one, 'bout a year back. I used to despise acrylic drums - when I first saw the Fibes jellybean kit, I was filled with disgust - plastic see-through drums?! Belch! Thanks to this forum, though, and to [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAcwvBD6rA8&feature=my_liked_videos&list=LLRmfX0AZRCj6rwYLXS6Z9jQ"]this Pink Floyd performance[/ame], my opinions changed quite a bit.
So when I saw this BD for sale again, I immediately wrote the seller. He was tricky. I had to pay more than we settled on first, because he insisted on selling other garbage along with it (homemade cymbal and tom holder, some cracked HH cymbal and trashed 10" Amati bonga from the 80s), but I still think I made quite a deal, because of rarity of this drum. 80 dollars - not bad, eh?
It's welded from two pieces of plexiglass - tom holder bracket is inserted right into the seam electricit. It is a "concert BD" as it has no hardware on the reso side. No edge there, too - not that the bearing edge on the batter side was anything special. It's basically flat there, too! It has some dings, scratches and few cracks in the shell - nothing on any of edges, so I hope they won't spread.
It sounds quite nice, though, with a clear PinStripe head and some muffling. I think I'll be putting some Hydraulic head on it in the future. I plan to leave it at our summer cottage - it should be immune to frost and humidity, right? And I won't have to drag a BD there any time I want to play there.
