A prototype 14X6 snare out of a Vintage Premier tom

Loading...

Hi guys,

just finished this 14x6 snare. It was made out of a 14 Vintage Premier tom. 3 ply African mahogany with solid beech rings. I have managed to cut the tom shell in a way that no holes were left to fill. Just had to remove one of the rings from the rest piece and glue it back to the shell. As the tom had 8 lugs

i used the existing 8 holes and drilled another 8 for the tube lugs plus few more for the rest of the hardware. I used 14" Vintage stick safer hoops and a Trick strainer and butt. 30 degrees bearing edges on the inside and round over on the outside.

I would love to hear your honest opinion on the finish! I can bravely take criticism! :)

BTW if anyone is interested in buying it i am willing to sell it. I will only charge

for the hardware (brushed chrome!). The shell and the work done are free! That's €190!

Plus whatever the shipping from Europe is.

What a great job! I love it when people explore the unconventional and create a piece of art!

Once again, you've produced an awesome drum. Now that I see what you've done, I think I would rather have a drum like this, than an all original collector drum. You can use this without the fear of it getting screwed up. The combination of old wood and new hardware make it a killer snare.

Keep up the great work and keep sharing.

I love it. That finish with brushed chrome looks fantastic. I also really like the tapered tube lugs. Where did those come from?

Hi teverson-sr,

at first i didn't want to cut any snare beds and i ordered a Fatcat snare wire w/

Pitch as it states in their add that is the one to use for "no snare beds". However my supplier didn't have that in stock so i decided to cut them to accommodate a pure sound wires. So i cut them shallow, about 2mm deep and wide - between the two closest lugs. I am quite happy with the result. The snare has a nice open sound but that is a combination of things as you'd know;

heads, edges, re-rings, hoops, shell thickness etc. The snare wire just added the dryness i want for all my snares. I just want my snares dry and warm so i

don't hurt my band mates ears ;) We try to play low, you know...

Hi tnsquint, i get these from one of my suppliers, ST drums in Germany.

But they charge a lot for shipment and do not have this length at the moment.
