Hey there guys & gals! Per Vintage Drum Forum (VDF) request I am sending out a big Southern "Howdy" to y'all. Firstly, what a kewl web site with lots of information from all over...and some totally amazing kit pics.
Here's my vintage story (keep in mind I was probably 13 or 14).
My first kit was this small 3-piece white sparkle-looking set. Sounded nice (when played by others), but the tom mounting hardware was less than desired http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/images/tom_article/34%20Steve%20Maxwell%20rail%20consolette_th.jpg Rogers came out with this manly Memoryloc hardware that sold me. I replaced the old 'can't stay in place consolette/ratchet system with this massive forget not system. Shortly afterwards, I replaced the bass spurs with the same Memoryloc system. I wasn't liking the sound of my snare and thought, "Only if it were deeper, it should produce the sound I was looking for". I purchased another 14" wood snare and glued the two together (I was 13!). Nope, that wasn't it. I eventually bought a CB700 chrome snare which I still have, but taped and muffled all to heck to get a sound I can deal with.
It wasn't until recently (30+ years later) that I realized what I had as a youngster. A Camco Combo Outfit in a 3-D covering. http://vintagedrumguide.com/images/camco_drum_sets/1965-camco_drumsets4.jpg I still have the bass and snare, but had recovered them in a black diamond finish (LOVE IT!) and added holes for the new hardware. The double snare found the trash and never seen from again.
I could kick myself for what I had done! Well, that's my little story guys. C ya, GE!
